Maize's Return of the Victors Valiant | Michigan Wolverines Football

    NCAA 2007 on PS2 - Idaho (DC)
NCAA 2008 on PS2 - Kent State (DC), Michigan (MM)
NCAA 2009 on PS2 - New Mexico State (MM)
NCAA 2010 on PS2 - Notre Dame (OS)
    NCAA 2011 on PS3 - Kent State (OS/VSN/DSS)
    NCAA 2012 on PS3 - UCLA (DSS)
    NCAA 2013 on PS3 - Duke (DSS), Kentucky (VSN/DSS)
NCAA 2014 on PS3 - UNLV (SS/OS), Eastern Michigan (OS)
    NCAA 2015 on PS3 - Michigan (OS)

I have decided to start a dynasty with my favorite team (and namesake), Michigan. The last time I posted a Michigan dynasty: It was ahead of the 2007 season, I was in high school and Madden Mania was my place of business. Things have changed, although Michigan has since struggled.

The issues under Head Coach Rich Rodriguez (2008-10) are well documented and it marked a downturn for the program. Brady Hoke's tenure started with a BCS Bowl victory, but the last two seasons have been difficult:

A 15-11 overall record includes 7 conference losses, two straight bowl game losses and a losing road record. The difficulty in the past two seasons and rise of rival programs Michigan State and Ohio State has put Brady Hoke on the hot seat.

My focus will be on restoring Michigan to a perennial power in college football. That means consistently being ranked in the Top 25, competing for Big Ten titles, and appearing in BCS Bowl Games.

Just a few notes on this dynasty. There won't be a playoff, so nothing about the postseason will change. Conferences are updated to reflect the 2014 season, which has slightly changed the schedule. Although home/away for most conference games is not correct, otherwise it's good to go.

As always, my emphasis will be on writing and realism. If you have any questions or comments, let me know. Thanks.

    Dynasty Information
    Platform: Playstation 3
    Gameplay Level: All-American
    Quarter Length: 9 Minutes
Sliders: Custom, always a work in progress.
Rosters: PS3 2014-15 Roster Community Project (OS)
Roster Size: 70 players, 60 active
Scheduling: Realism is the key. I will try to stick to Michigan's future schedule and also stick to how they usually schedule games.
Redshirts: I am allowed to redshirt true freshmen, transfers, and back-up skill position players.
    Recruiting: All-American Level.
In-Season Updates: Top 25 and Heisman watch will be updated every week. Team standings and individual statistics will be updated after the first four game, after the ninth game, then after the final game of the season.
In-Game: Choose one of the selected plays on First and Second Down. Then on third down, I am on my own. Try to create realistic statistics, so bring in back-ups if the game gets out of reach. Adjust sliders after every four games if needed.

Re: Maize's Return of the Victors Valiant | Michigan Wolverines Football

          Feel free to post.

          - I will be adding a lot of real recruits for the Class of 2015. Not just for Michigan, but for other teams as well. I usually change the basic information, appearance, equipment and ratings of generic players to closely resemble an actual recruit. If there's any players I should add, let me know.
          - Article coming that will announce the Depth Chart vs. Appalachian State
          - Article coming on Brady Hoke, the last three seasons and a preview of the upcoming season.

I have already started playing games. I made a slight mistakes and statistics won't happen until after the sixth game (I usually put them out for the fourth game).

          Thanks!

Hoke & Co. Prepare for New Season, App State in Opener
Team 135 kicks off their season Saturday, against Appalachian State. The last time the Mountaineers visited The Big House is an all-too-haunting memory for Michigan fans. A 34-32 loss for Michigan on that Saturday afternoon would be part of Lloyd Carr's final season as Head Coach. It is still considered one of the biggest upsets in college football history, with Michigan being ranked fifth heading into the game.

The game brought notoriety to the Appalachian State program, Head Coach Jerry Moore and Quarterback Armanti Edwards. The Mountaineers would go on to win a third straight FCS National Championship, and Michigan would stumble to a 9-4 record.

From there, Michigan would continue through some of it's least successful football in program history. The winning percentage is the worst since Bump Elliott was Head Coach (1959-68). After that '07 season, Lloyd Carr gave way to Rich Rodriguez. Known as an innovative offensive mind, Rodriguez brought major change for the program and the difference did not result in wins. Following his departure, Brady Hoke has taken over. Now entering his fourth season, Hoke has a 26-13 record.

Hoke's first season was a hit. An 11-2 record included finally beating Ohio State. A Sugar Bowl win on a game-winning Field Goal put many at ease, celebrating a return to Michigan's winning ways. Appalachian State seemed a distant memory, until they showed back up on the schedule. With their return to the Big House comes some uncertainty around Michigan's program.

Last year, it became apparent that the offense went stale as it tried to replace Denard Robinson and his production. More than that, the offensive line became a weakness and scrutiny built up against Hoke and his staff. Offensive Coordinator Al Borges was replaced by Doug Nussmeier. Nussmeier comes to Ann Arbor decorated after guiding Alabama's offense the previous two seasons. That included helping the Crimson Tide win the 2013 BCS National Championship.

Michigan's personnel has changed a bit as well. The team returns 16 starters, but there is an infusion of young players with only one senior (Devin Gardner) starting on offense.

The scrutiny exists that will make this an important season for Brady Hoke and Michigan football. If the team continues to lose close games, struggle against the Big Ten (especially on the road), and continue to watch their rivals improve - it could mean another change is coming to the storied football program in Ann Arbor.

If Team 135 wants to silence critics and find success, it starts by beating Appalachian State.

Looking forward to this dynasty, should be exciting to get your own recruits into Ann Arbor and bring Michigan back to elite status.

Re: Maize's Return of the Victors Valiant | Michigan Wolverines Football

Roster Takes Shape Before Opening Game
The depth chart for the Appalachian State game has been released by the Athletic Department. Head Coach Brady Hoke made himself available to the media to discuss the opening chart heading into the first game. Offensively, the big story is the amount of new starters for the Wolverines. In the backfield, Derrick Green gets the nod after an impressive camp under new coordinator Doug Nussmeier. Many of the questions on offense, however, are not in the backfield.

The line protecting for fifth year senior Devin Gardner includes three new starters and another newcomer starting against the Mountaineers. Replacing Taylor Lewan at left tackle is true freshman Mason Cole. Cole's outstanding play since arriving at Ann Arbor has vaulted him to the starting spot. Some positions are still unsettled, notably at right guard. Kyle Bosch is slated to start the opener, but that is in part to Kyle Kalis still recovering from injury. Kalis started the majority of the team's games at right guard last season.

Improvement on the line has been key for the player and coaches heading into 2014. The team is hoping to establish more of a consistent running game, having a stable of capable players with Green, De'Veon Smith, and Justice Hayes leading the way.

Ty Isaac, a recent transfer from USC, was supposed to be part of the rushing attack for Michigan this season. Isaac transferred to Michigan to be closer to his family with his mother recovering after hearing loss. Isaac filed a hardship waiver, attempting to play right away. The NCAA recently denied that waiver, forcing Isaac to miss the entire 2014 season. He will have three years of eligibility remaining, starting in 2015.

Another unit with question marks is the receiver position. Devin Funchess, a converted tight end, is expected to have a breakout season. Someone will have to make up for the loss of Jeremy Gallon and his incredible production last season. Beyond Funchess is a group of receivers with no player that has "stood out." Amara Darboh and Jehu Chesson will split snaps as the team's second receivier. Darboh missed last season with an injury, while Chesson is only a sophomore. Dennis Norfleet will play as the team's slot receiver, along with being the team's designated kick and punt returner.

The offense will be without starting tight end Jake Butt for the first game. Butt is still recovering from a knee injury, but the reliable and tough receiver plans to play against Notre Dame.

Offensively, there's a lot of uncertainty and even questions about how the offense will look. It's expected that there will be more of an emphasis on the running game, but not much else is known. The offense is relying on young players, with inexperience abound.

Defensive Coordinator Greg Mattison is expecting improved play from a defense that returns seven starters. Plus, the return of Jake Ryan after missing all of 2013 with an ACL injury that happened prior to the season. Mattison wants less mistakes and a consistent play from a defense that is the stronger part of the Wolverine's team.

Much of the team's leadership comes from the defense. Seniors Frank Clark and Brennan Beyer will be team captains for the game against Appalachian State. They also bookend Michigan up-front and are part of a deep front line. The interior of the line will switch personnel constantly. Ondre Pipkins, who missed part of last season with an injury, is fighting for time with true freshman Bryan Mone and walk-on Ryan Glasgow.

"Glasgow might be the best story out of camp," said Head Coach Brady Hoke. Brother of offensive lineman Graham, Ryan fought and found a place on the team. After a tremendous performance in the Spring Game, he cracked the top three at nose tackle. From there, he has played his way into the rotation.

Linebacker seems to be the team's strongest unit, led by Desmond Morgan and Jake Ryan. Speaking to the depth at linebacker, Morgan almost lost his starting spot to Joe Bolden, who will be used in four linebacker sets and subbing in at all three linebacker spots. At the SAM spot, Royce Jenkins-Stone and James Ross have fought all summer with Ross finally being named the starter for the opening game. Many expect Jenkins-Stone to see more snaps, especially given his role on special teams.

Then there is the secondary, a position that was a weakness for Michigan last year. When Michigan found itself in shootouts last season, it was usually the secondary to blame. Two starters return, with corners Raymon Taylor and Blake Countess getting the nod to start week one. They are being pushed by multiple players, notably true freshman Jabrill Peppers.

A unanimous top-five player in the Class of 2014, Peppers is the team's nickel corner and will see time on special teams as well. His athleticism and aggressive approach has made him a favorite of fans and coaches alike.

As for the safety position, Jarrod Wilson and Jeremy Clark are ready for App State. Safety is another position where depth means a rotation of players could be used. It gives the defense a versatility that lacked last season, but it also means giving minutes to less experienced players.

Finally, special teams could play a key role against Appalachian State. It did in their initial meeting, but Michigan is hoping for better play from senior Matt Wile and Will Hagerup. Wile takes over all placekicking duties and Hagerup will hopefully improve from his 2013 season.

There are definitely large question marks looming over Michigan as the team prepares to play in less-than 24 hours. Youth is being served, with only six seniors starting (2 more if you include Wile and Hagerup). The offense is expected to look different, but are the changes enough with to spark an inexperienced team?

A lot of the pressure in 2014 will be on two men: Brady Hoke and Devin Gardner. Gardner is being asked to be a leader and vocal presence on the team. Hoke must guide Michigan to a winning season and prove the program is in good hands. Beyond those two, Michigan will need players to step up if they want to compete in the Big Ten this season.

                    That's the plan, thanks man.

That last article was kind of a catch-all. I mention Isaac, Jake Butt's injury, the starters and a few little things about the roster. I decided not to redshirt any freshman although there's a few that I don't think will play (Speight, Harris, Marshall).

Recruiting is definitely key. I'll post the App State game tonight!

Since it is the first week of the season, I'll post Top 25 after the Notre Dame game. Also, since the Heisman watch isn't updated, I won't post it until Week 9. I'm hoping by then that players have cycled out that remained on the list before (like Braxton Miller).

Also, I am a bit ahead so updates should come pretty quickly to start the season. I had a bit of a weird saving issue between the Minnesota and Penn State games. So I corrected everything, but now stats won't be released until after the sixth game. Usually, I post stats after the fourth and ninth. I will still post stats after the ninth game as well. Also, there's a week where the Top 25 won't be posted. Stupid Autosave, luckily I always save multiple files lol.

Wolverines Recover and Regroup, Prepare for Irish
Michigan had success in their opening game of the 2014 season. Much to the delight of fans and the coaching staff; the team was able to make stops on defense and establish a running game. Team 135 starts their campaign with a win, but there was some positive and negatives to take from the Appalachian State game. Beating the team that once upset the Wolverines was a huge positive, as was the debut of Offensive Coordinator Doug Nussmeier.

'Coach Nuss' came to Michigan from Alabama, where he had helped direct one of the best rushing attacks in the nation. Through one game, Michigan piled up 321 rushing yards - the best rushing performance by the Wolverines since Denard Robinson's junior season. Derrick Green proved to be the workhorse, while De'Veon Smith looks ready to give the team a two-headed attack.

As for the rest of the offense, two injuries are getting some major attention. Receiver Amara Darboh, who missed last season with a leg injury, pulled a pectoral muscle on a special teams play. He will likely miss the next four games, including the Big Ten opener against Minnesota. This means more snaps for Jehu Chesson and possible playing time for true freshman Freddy Canteen.

The other notable injury is more worrisome for the team. Early in the third quarter, right tackle Ben Braden left the field holding his hand. An X-Ray revealed a break that could require surgery. Surgery would cost Braden the entire season. Instead, he will allow it heal and Braden will likely miss eight weeks. He hopes to be back for the Michigan State game.

In his absence, versatile guard David Dawson will start. Dawson saw time during camp at right tackle and replaced Braden during the Appalachian State game. Dawson will be backed up by Logan Tuley-Tillman, and Offensive Line Coach Darrell Funk said the two (Dawson and Tuley-Tillman) will compete weekly to start.

Even with the injuries, the line only allowed two sacks and opened up big holes in the run game. The line received rave reviews by Head Coach Brady Hoke, who was happy with the play on both sides of the ball.

"We did a nice job getting a lot of players involved. Eight guys had a reception, we found a good rotation on the defensive line. It was good, it was what we needed to see before (Notre Dame)."

Hoke is also happy that tight end Jake Butt is healthy and will start against the Fighting Irish. Butt will aid in blocking and the passing game. Hoke did say that Devin Gardner will need to "settle in quickly," in the team's road opener.

Notre Dame is also coming off a big win against Rice, with a big performance from Quarterback Everett Golson in his return. This is of course the last scheduled game between Michigan and Notre Dame. Brady Hoke has been vocal that the rivalry game should continue. For now, both teams don't have an open game for next season. Michigan has won six of the last ten meetings, with the team's meeting annually since 2002.

"We are hoping this is just a short hiatus because we believe its one of the premiere rivalries in college football. The two winningest team in college football history, the deep history of both programs - This should happen every year." said Michigan Athletic Director David Brandon. Brandon said there are no current talks, but he is hoping something can happen to bring the game back "this decade."

For now, Michigan will travel to Notre Dame looking to beat the ranked Irish. The night game will be broadcast on NBC with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 PM.
