AFC West Underdogs: A San Diego Chargers Franchise Story (Madden 15)

Reports are coming out of San Diego saying that Owner Alex Spanos has stepped down from the team due to medical issues. No further comments were made on the issues, but Spanos named former Team Consultant, PJ Shulters, as the new man in charge.

We will take you to San Diego's Press Conference now to get a word with the new owner.

Alex Spanos says his farewell speech and welcomes Chargers new owner, PJ Shulters, to the podium.

    "Question 1:

How does it feel to take over for a team that is still very much in the mix of things?

    Shulters:

It's an honor actually. I, as well as others in the organization, was shocked when Alex [Spanos] announced this morning that he would have to step down as the team's owner and I am disheartened to hear about his medical concerns. We all wish him a nice recovery and I thank him for the opportunity he has given me.

    Question 2:

Are there any changes you are planning to make to this team as of right now?

    Shulters:

Uhh, there's really not that many to make, I feel, well, we feel, that we are in a good position to compete in the AFC and in the NFL right now. Philip [Rivers] is a proven elite quarterback and we have some young studs on this team and I feel we have a solid defense. There is always room for improvement, but we will make those decisions when the time comes.

    Question 3:

There have been rumors all offseason about this team changing up the offensive and defensive schemes, can you tell us anything about that?

    Shulters:

Well, we definitely look into every opportunity to improve this team and yes, we are throwing some new looks in. I know Mike [McCoy] really wanted to take advantage of some talented players on our offense and on defense he is looking to ways of making our defense more versatile. I think you will see a lot more opportunities being created for our key players on offense, that's for sure.

    Question 4:

As it stands right now, what are you looking to correct this season?

    Shulters:

This season we are looking to get better on defense and we think we know how to do that right now. We are looking to shut down the run games that opposing teams bring and the biggest key this offseason, which has been nailed into the defensive players' heads', is that tackling is utterly important. We need guys that can tackle and don't shy away from wrapping guys up.

On offense, like I said, it is just giving some of the guys more opportunities to make plays.

    Question 5:

What do you expect out of the team this season?

    Shulters:

I expect big things, as any owner should. I think we have a good chance to compete and we will compete. I'm almost certain that we can get back into the playoffs this year and potentially make some noise. "

That closes out the bulk of the Press Conference. Shulters is already making some moves though, as the team announced the signing of Pro-Bowl Cornerback Brandon Flowers, who was recently released by division rivals, the Kansas City Chiefs.

Re: AFC West Underdogs: A San Diego Chargers Franchise Story (Madden 15)

      Shulters:

I wanted to go over some things ahead of the season with the fans; be it expectations, re-sign goals, and development as well.

      Season Expectations:

      Phillip Rivers:

Continue to grow in Coach McCoy's offense and show that you are still an elite Quaterback.

About 4,000 yards 28 TDs and limit to 16 INTs

      Ryan Matthews:

I want Matthews to stay healthy, most of all, but I also expect another good season of running the football

I'd say 1,200 yards 6 TDs and a limit of 4 Fumbles would exceed my expectations.

      Danny Woodhead:

He needs to get more opportunities and keep a focus on being a playmaker all over the field

      At least 400 rushing yards
600 receiving with a total of 9 TDs.

      Keenan Allen:

I expect another big year out of Allen, 70 Catches, 1,000 yards, 7 TDs, and only 8 Drops would please me.

      Antonio Gates:

I want you to finish your career strong! Most importantly, get back to being healthy. 45 catches, 650 yard, 4 TDs would be excellent.

      O-Line:

You need to keep Rivers upright! Learn to block on screen plays!
      -35 sacks this year.

      Entire Defense:

Tackle! Tackle! Tackle! I don't want to see missed tackles!

      Re-sign Goals:

      Danny Woodhead
      Ryan Matthews?
      Nick Hardwick
      Corey Liuget
      Brandon Flowers

      Development Goals:

Melvin Ingram needs to continue to progress as this teams pass rusher.

Keenan Allen needs to develop into "The guy".

Ladarius Green needs to be ready to take over.

Jason Verrett needs to play outside eventually.

Darrell Stuckey could end up taking over at SS.

Manti Te'o needs to become a defensive run stopper.

DJ Fluker may be going over to LT, so get him ready to Pass Block

Donal Butler was paid huge money and he needs to be ready to play like it.

        Post-Game Press Conference:

        Question 1:

How good is it to come off of a win on the opening day of the Preseason?

        McCoy:

Even though it's Preseason, it still feels good when you win and tonight we were very impressed with quite a few players.

        Question 2:

Were there any players in particular that stood out?

        McCoy:

We thought Marion [Grice] did a real nice job coming in against the 2's and 3's. Danny [Woodhead] had that nice kick return on special teams, but he contributed well on the ground too. Manti [Te'o] tackled well, which we have preached tackling all throughout training camp, so that's good to see. I like a lot of the things we were able to do. We got a lot of pressure on the Quarterback and ran the ball effectively.

        Question 3:

On the Depth Chart, Woodhead is listed as the starting Fullback, any comments on that?

        McCoy:

We want Danny to have plenty of opportunities out of the backfield, so we chose to go with a two-back type system here on offense and he performed.

        Question 4:

What corrections are you looking to make after Kyle Orton torched your defense with the pass to Cole Beasley?

        McCoy:

Yeah, we have to fix that, it was a blown coverage on the side by Jason [Verrett]. He's a rookie and it's best to get the jitters out during the preseason. We will be coaching him up though, that's for sure.

        Question 5:

What are you looking for in next weeks game?

        McCoy:

I look forward to having better tackling, we missed a few tackles out there tonight and we are going to work on that, but overall I was fairly impressed with the defense.

        Question 6:

What did you think of your starting offense?

        McCoy:

They looked quick, sharp, and productive; words we have been preaching to the offense all offseason. I was very impressed with River's accuracy and Gates ran a beautiful screen into the end zone; it was all around good for us.

            Post-Game Press Conference:

            Question 1:

Backup Quarterback Tavaris Jackson threw for 311 Yds and 4 TDs on your defense, what do you attribute this to?

            McCoy:

Poor coverage, downright bad coverage, that's all. There were more blown coverages this week, just as last week. I personally don't like shoot outs like this game was today, I more prefer to score a ton of points and keep the opposing offense out of the end zone, but that didn't happen today. We missed a lot of tackles again and we are going to work on it some more.

            Question 2:

Coach, this missing tackles and blown coverage problem has been addressed two weeks in a row, when is it going to actually be corrected?

            McCoy:

-Laughs- It's game 2 of the Preseason, we have plenty of time to work on our defense, and we will. We'll do our job.

            Question 3:

Was there any impressive performances for your team today?

            McCoy:

Absolutely, we really hit hard with the new offensive scheme this week, to get the guys some reps in it, and I think the results could have been a little better, but overall, I was impressed.

Donald Brown ran his tail off out there tonight and pretty much secured his spot on the team, but Marion [Grice] runs hard too. This could be a team that carries 4 backs.

Kavell Conner won the third string ILB spot today, which was a welcomed sight.

Te'o is still making some solid plays too, so we have a lot to look forward to from him this season.

            Question 4:

How do you feel about the last two games being so high up in terms of score?

            McCoy:

I just wish all of those points were ours and not the opponents. I would rather win a game 21-10 than 39-36. We are looking to build a defense here and a night like tonight is really disheartening.

            Question 5:

            Does this loss matter tonight?

            McCoy:

In a sense, it matters, you know the guys are going to take it hard, they played well tonight and unfortunately it didn't result in a win. It's still preseason though and the loss gave us the best chance to evaluate our team.

              Question 1:

Your offense looked good all around tonight and your defense looked more improved this week, what did you guys do to improve from last week?

              McCoy:

Our defense stepped up when their 1st stringers were out of the game, Frank Gore killed us today and we can't have that going forward. That being said, we played a little better defense afterwards and our offense played lights out. Rivers is ready for the season. We just kept doing what we always do in preparation and we were just on our game today.

Re: AFC West Underdogs: A San Diego Chargers Franchise Story (Madden 15)

                53 Man Press Conference:

                Shulters:

Hello everybody, coach McCoy and I are hear to talk about our thoughts on the entire Preseason and our overall 53 man roster, we will now take any questions for either Mike or I.

Question 1: PJ, there are some rumors about Ryan Matthews not being that big of a concern when considering who you will re-sign in the offseason are there truth to these rumors?

                Shulters:

I don't know where you are hearing rumors from, but we are not too worried about that right now. We want to worry about football, we have a game on Monday we have to worry about and 15 other games this season. Right now we aren't worrying about contracts or anything like that. When the time comes, we will assess the team and see where we need to get better and where could could let some guys go. We Like Ryan and as of now he is a key member of this team.

Question 2: Coach McCoy, what impressed you the most in the Preseason?

                McCoy:

We did a lot of good things in the Preseason. Our offense looked fluid and they are picking up the new schemes really well. The defense started out slow, but they improved game to game and you saw it in the Cardinals game that we are getting better at tackling and are giving up less plays.

Question 3: Coach McCoy, what do you think of your first round pick this year and what role do you see Jason playing?

                McCoy:

Jason struggled early in the first two games, he played well in the slot though. The last game against the Cardinals is where you really saw his skill set come to fruition. He covered guys well and had two big interceptions, one for a touchdown and the other were he was a yard short of bringing a second to the house. He is most likely going to continue to develop in the slot this season.

Question 4: PJ, what's the reason for keeping 4 backs on the roster?

                Shulters:

All 4 of the backs on this team played well and you saw that. It would be a huge loss if we didn't keep Donald Brown, same goes for Grice, so we chose to keep them both.

Question 5: PJ, does keeping 4 backs spell the end for one of the other backs?

                Shulters:

We just answered that question actually. That's not the case at all.

                        Chargers vs. Cardinals Recap:

Opening day of football was among us yesterday, well opening Monday Night Football anyway. Things started out well for both teams defensively as the Chargers came out on fire, stopping runs in the backfield or after very short games. The Cardinals had similar success early, stopping the run and pressuring Philip Rivers consistently. Philip Rivers was 1 for 7 at one primarily because of bad drops by Allen, Woodhead, and Matthews, but the Cardinals made it clear early that Rivers was going to get hit.

After going 4 for 11 passing, Rivers took a big shot and did not get up for a while. He walked off of the field under his own power and went straight into the locker room. He did not return, but the reports from the Chargers sideline were positive. Kellen Clemens came in and led the Chargers on a drive to take the lead with a pass to Keenan Allen in the back of the end zone.

That was all the Chargers would do because Clemens proved to be incompetent, throwing 3 interceptions, one in which was returned 96 yards by Tyron Mathieu. The Cardinals absolutely took over after halftime and Clemens was often pressured. The game was declared over after Clemens threw his second interception to Daryl Washington in the fourth quarter.

Despite the troubles for the Chargers, Running Back Ryan Matthews had a good game with 98 yards on 20 carries.

Morning came along and the news got worse for the Chargers, Quarterback Philip Rivers reportedly tore his pectoral muscle and has been placed on IR and he will not return.

That stinks and tough way to start the year. Are you going to stay with Clemens or pick up some one else?

                              News:

In the wake of Quarterback Philip Rivers being put on season ending IR, the San Diego Chargers have signed veteran QB Derek Anderson and have committed to Kellen Clemens as of right now.

"It's a tough situation, Philip is an excellent Quarterback and it's a shame what happened, but we have to move on as a football team." Mike McCoy made his statement on the situation. "We are committed to Kellen and we are still going to go out there and compete every week."

The Chargers have also made it clear that Nick Novak's job is on the line after missing 3 Field Goals against the Cardinals.
