Why can't 2K look this good ?

Newest Sony commercial, the first skit with Kevin Durant represents 2K15 I'm 99.9% sure, and whoever made it well they painted a masterpiece....
I just wish I had a link where you can download the full quality uncompressed youtube garbage I have linked here but you can still definitely see the overall quality

When are we going to see 2K or any other basketball game look as damned good as it does with this obviously rendered animation, everything (except the length of the net if you wan't to be picky) is absolutely on point.
Including James Harden looking like he typically does on defense... confused and disinterested


just look at Durant's body type, look at his face, look at how perfect the jerseys fit nice and tucked in like real life, look at Harden's beard and blank empty stare while playing defense for God's sake.... the backboard cam showing how the net is neatly fitted through the dual ring of the Spalding rim JUST like in real life, instead of the low res fish hooks fish nets we get with 2K...


If we don't get games looking this good on next gen consoles, I'm quitting gaming

Probably whenever we're willing to put up with 1 frame per hour, so it has time to render everything nicely, like they can with commercials and movies

I'm not really talking about performance, just the overall quality of the items on display. Performance anyway gets better with years as we all know
If some guy (probably a small animation team who've never picked up a basketball in their life) sitting in a Sony office somewhere can make a rim and net as realistic as that, can make the player models and body types look THAT realistic....

then why can't 2K who have a massive team dedicated to doing exactly that, can at least get some of the details down....

We still got the floating one size fit all baggy muffin top over the waist band jerseys, which make pretty much every players torso look identical regardless of body type... we still got the fish net hook and horrible nets in 2K, etc....

Patience my friend. CGI level gaming is not too far off. I'd say 4-5 years we'll be there.

chill, dude…games have come far, but you're going to have to wait. systems still aren't powerful enough to handle photorealistic "movie-quality" CGI.

The visuals in games are FAR ahead of the AI and gameplay. I think it's time to focus more attention on how games play. They look fantastic.

When it comes down to it, the fun of the game comes from the realism, the strategy, and skill it takes to play.

Most of that IS just 2K assets run through a non-real time renderer with global illumination and composited with filmed elements. Durant' body is almost exactly the same model used in 2K. It has a distinctive look in the shoulders. The skin has been worked over with a new material (and why it actually looks flat and Klay-like on Harden). The net looks either like a high end physics simulation or a composite of a real hoop. Same goes with the jerseys-- a pre rendered cloth simulator that isn't possible in real time.

So three of the things you're most impressed with are three of the things that are most costly to calculate in real time. It's not coming anytime soon-- but there are real time methods that are approaching that in approximating a rough illusion, if not exactly at that level of fidelity. But frankly, the animations did not look that impressive to me, or any more impressive than what exists in the game (probably because they're some of the same clips).

I think the games look pretty good today, hopefully they will get to what we see there within a few years...

2K still has a long way to go gameplay wise in my opinion, we still need to see a real physics based engine and system as opposed to canned animation system we see today, that's priority number 1.

But this little clip is real pretty, I think the game will probably look this pretty before it plays any better.

THANK YOU MAN! On the way home from work last night I was thinking about how amazing it was to me the year that you could actually see the player's real numbers on Lakers vs. Celtics. Now we're complaining about the amount of armpit hair... The sense of entitlement sometimes is overwhelming.

I don't know why everyone thinks a physics engine will be this game's savior. While a physics engine has a lot going for it, it also has many obstacles.

If we were to remove the really bad animations from 2K (we all know what they are) but left the good ones, the majority of people wouldn't be such advocates for a physics engine. The really good contextually appropriate animations in 2K are stellar. They add to realism and gameplay. They are the thing that make a lot of people smile and think "that was basketball right there!" Why remove that? Just get rid of the useless and profoundly exaggerated animations that have no place in the game. Less time spent on a new engine means more time spent on bettering what we already have.

Haha, bang on! I remember playing college hoops on Super Nintendo back in the day thinking it was so great. I'm amazed where we're at today.
