So when are you all going to make a football game?
Now that the Unreal engine is free you guys that have the time should come together and create a football game. I'm sure their is enough people on this board who could contribute in some little way to help this happen.Tags: None -
Re: So when are you all going to make a football game?
What!? These things still costs tons of money to produce to hire various people with certain skill sets. It still needs to be able to sell well for there to be interest to even make a game, no one is going to leave a paying job to go make a game that doesn't have a lot of interest and have not too promising results. Also JMF16 is a thing. Games take years to make even with it as a main focus with a team of devs, marketers, investors etc. Just because the engine is free doesn't mean people have practice and know it nor have the time and money to make a full fledged football game. -

It's true that it can take time to get great. Everyone starts from somewhere! Still might be fun to try out the tools and learn a bit more about the process.
If anything, it might help spread a greater level of understanding of what goes into making that kind of game.Comment

Re: So when are you all going to make a football game?
My long posted didn't show up.
See I am looking at it with the amount of members on OS (larger than any development team) who want a good football game we could get people to put in a little input here and there to bring down the time consumption. Just have to get people who have that free time with those specialized skill sets like coding etc involved. As for learning the software I am sure their are plenty of tutorials on Youtube to help with that.Comment

Yeah, get it downloaded and it'll point you in a few directions. I've tinkered but haven't had time to really get into it. It's far from just a matter of putting the textures and building blocks together though.Comment

Yeah. Making games is easy. Just watch a few hours of Youtube videos and you'll be set...
(Yes, I know that's not what you're saying. But I'm sure too many people THINK it.)Comment

Re: So when are you all going to make a football game?
If only! The thing is, there are a lot of talented and passionate people around here. The tools to make games are more accessible than ever before so there are great opportunities for people who are interested.
Sometimes I see talk along the lines of "I would do this instead" when it comes to the direction of a game. I think that's great and people should continue to share those thoughts. If it sparks the idea of "hey, maybe I can try this," that's even better IMO.
And like I said, the worst case is that someone learns a little bit more about the process. Our community loves to speculate and it would only give people more insight.
Just putting that seed out there as someone who never really thought about working in gaming and somehow ended up here anyway. The tools are there if someone wants to give it a go.

Re: So when are you all going to make a football game?
Yup, that's why I have unreal installed actually. I'm frustrated that there aren't more complicated encounters in Diablo 3 and decided to start tinkering with things. The end goal i will probably never reach (top down arpg with mmo-style/more complex encounters) but the curiosity got me this far.Comment

Re: So when are you all going to make a football game?
I was thinking about making a college football game, but it does take a lot of work. I would call the first one in my series, "Aaron Rodgers College Football". As for the NFL, "John Elway Football". I don't have the money to pay for licenses, so they are all going to be unlicensed. The question is, how do I make a football stadium in Unreal Engine 4? I've searched for tutorials and they only show UDK (for Unreal Engine 3) for a sports stadium.Comment

Re: So when are you all going to make a football game?
It would take an INSANE amount of time and effort, even for someone with loads of experience, to make a sim-style football game that would be good enough to get people to spend any time playing it. The effort would not be worth the reward of releasing your game to an Internet that couldn't care less.
This isn't an 'intro to game developing' project. This is a multi-year/million dollar project. Amateurs should be making platformers and puzzle games. There's just too much to consider when making a football game.Comment
