Masters of the Air Raid: A Texas Tech Dynasty (NCAA Football 14)

Welcome to my new dynasty! I will be playing as the Texas Tech Red Raiders and will try to build them into a consistent Big 12 contender. (Special thanks to TheSportsGuru11 for the banner!)

    Recent History

Texas Tech has more or less always been a middle of the pack team in the Big 12, they have never won a Big 12 championship and the closest they've got in the last decade was a 3-way tie in the Big 12 South during the 2008 season. Despite this, Texas Tech had 14 straight winning seasons from 1996-2011. That streak ended in the second year of Tommy Tuberville as the head coach. Tech fans prefer not to talk about the 3 seasons that he was in town. After Tuberville left for Cincinnati, Tech hired their former QB, Kliff Kingsbury as the new head coach. Kingsbury became the first Tech head coach to win his first 7 games and then he lost his next 5. Tech pulled an upset of the #14 Arizona State Sun Devils in the Holiday Bowl behind a great performance by true freshman QB, Davis Webb.
Going into 2014 Tech fans had high hopes for their team, hopes that were nearly destroyed in weeks 1 and 2, where the Red Raiders won by a combined 11 points over Central Arkansas and UTEP. Behind poor play from Davis Webb and a young, inexperienced defense, Tech had their worst season in over 2 decades.

    2015 Bright Spots

Not all things in the 2014 season were bad, freshman QB Patrick Mahomes lit up the field in his 3 starts at the end of the year, HB DeAndre Washington became the first 1,000 yard rusher since the Pre-Mike Leach era. On defense, the youth is still there but now it is experienced. LB Pete Robertson led the Big 12 in sacks with 12.

                      Offense Preview

                      QB

                      Depth Chart:
                      1. Patrick Mahomes (87 OVR)
                      2. Davis Webb (85 OVR)
                      3. Nik Schimonek (70 OVR)

At QB, the starter is Patrick Mahomes, a sophomore from Whitehouse, Texas. Mahomes played in 7 games for the Red Raiders in 2014, amassing 1547 passing yards and 16 TDs while throwing only 4 INTs. Mahomes is the best runner out of the 3 QBs, allowing him to use his agility to create plays in the pocket last year, Tech fans are looking for big things from him this year.

                          Offense Preview cont.

                          HB:

                          Depth Chart:
                          1. DeAndre Washington 88 OVR(Pictured above)
                          2. Justin Stockton 83 OVR
                          3. Quinton "Spin Move" White 77 OVR
Probably the strongest and deepest position for the Red Raiders this year is at halfback. With 3 strong backs, the running game will be a big factor in Tech getting back to a bowl. Headed by senior DeAndre Washington who was a 1,000 yard rusher last season and will be a force to reckon with in the Big 12. Backup Justin Stockton is without a doubt the fastest back for the Raiders, he has a 4.33 40 Yd Dash and is only a sophomore, look for big things from him. The final back, Quinton White is a nice compliment to the first 2. He has the best moves of the 3 constantly making defenders look stupid in the open field with his spin move.

                          WR

                          Depth Chart:
                          1. Jakeem Grant 88 OVR (Pictured above)
                          2. Reginald Davis 83 OVR
                          3. Devin Lauderdale 85 OVR
                          4. Dylan Cantrell 80 OVR

The receiving core this year is many things, 2 of those being young and fast. Jakeem Grant is the fastest player on the roster with a 4.3 40 Yd Dash and a ton of moves, if you're a defender in the open field with Grant, don't even try. Davis and Lauderdale are an impressive pair of young wideouts. Davis is nearly untouchable in open space and Lauderdale is the best all-around receiver. Cantrell is a great player that can grab nearly anything you throw his way.

At TE, freshmen Donta Thompson will get the nod.

                          O-Line

                          Starters: (LT-RT)
                          Le'Raven Clark 92 OVR
                          Alfredo Morales 84 OVR
Jared Kaster 82 OVR (Pictured Above)
                          Baylen Brown 85 OVR
                          Justin Murphy 78 OVR

The O-Line is the most experienced part of the offense. With 4 returning starters, there won't be many sacks given up.

                            Defense Preview

                            D-Line

                            Starters: (LE-RE)
                            Branden Jackson 84 OVR
                            Rika Levi 82 OVR
                            Bredan Fehoko 81 OVR
Pete Robertson 87 OVR (Pictured Above)

Three of the starters on the line are seniors. Robertson was a LB last season but under new DC, David Gibbs, he has been converted to an end. Robertson led the conference in sacks last season and decided to come back for his senior year. Levi and Fehoko are solid players to plug the middle of the field with and stuff the run game. Jackson is an athletic DE that gets off blocks quick and gets some solid plays in.

                            LineBackers

                            Starters: (LOLB-ROLB)
Micah Awe 84 OVR (Pictured Above)
                            Mike Mitchell 80 OVR
                            Andre Ross 76 OVR

A young LB core is led by the lone senior, Micah Awe. Awe didn't make a start until halfway through his junior year and is expected to carry this squad through the year. Mike Mitchell is a former top 60 recruit that transferred from Ohio State, and after sitting out last season, will be a big contributer to the defense this year.

                            Secondary

                            Starters: (CB2, FS, SS, CB1)
                            Justis Nelson 80 OVR
                            Keenon Ward 84 OVR
J.J. Gaines 85 OVR (Pictured Above)
                            Nigel Bethel II 81 OVR

The secondary was a major weakness for the Red Raiders last season, with 2 of the 3 starting corners true freshmen, most teams had a field day shredding the secondary. Now with Gaines as a senior and Bethel and Nelson a sophomore and junior, they will be able to shut down some of the passing attacks that burned them last year.

Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. UT-San Antonio Roadrunners

The first game of the year for the Red Raiders appears to be a lopsided one, a nice warm up game for the first real test next week when they travel to Arkansas. Not really anything to say except for blowout.
