Golf Club or EA PGA ?
Hey all, I have been itching to play a good sim golf game since I got my PS4 about a month ago but am hesitant to pay near price for something that has been out for about a year which is why I haven't pulled back the swing meter back on The Golf Club (I realize 30 is still less than 60). Should I save up the little money I have as a broke college guy and get EA PGA when it comes out or would you recommend giving Golf Club a go?Tags: None -
Golf Club or EA PGA ?
I don't think anyone could give an honest opinion on the yet to be released game by EA. The Golf Club is a damn good game that keeps getting better.

For me, it depends on what you are looking for in a golf game.
TGC has it's positives. Course customization, and basically unlimited replay value as a result. It's a fun game to play. It's a challenge too. Almost a ridiculous challenge at some points.
TGC has a major negative to me though, and that's visuals. IMO, it's brutal to look at for a next gen title. There's almost no presentation, no real commentary, it just leaves a lot to be desired from that standpoint. If' you're looking for a game that just drops you on a course and lets you whack around a ball. Then TGC works.
If you are looking for the typical EA experience (assuming you've played the TW series previously as it sounds like you may have), then RMPGATour might be your better bet. The visuals are obviously superior in every aspect by the initial impressions. You have real courses, real golfers, real equipment etc. etc. Some here may not be satisfied with what ultimately ends up being the camera angles for EA's game. Ultimately, it's pretty hard to determine what theyre going to do with it, since it's obviously not out. Check out the info in some of the threads here though, it's looking really good so far. Even with the new game engine being used, I don't anticipate the core gameplay itself changing too much though.
Personally for me, I've always enjoyed the EA series. Some don't because it's not "sim" enough. To me, I don't care too much. If I want "sim", I'll head to the real course myself. I play it as a video game. If it resembles golf, looks good, plays good, I'm happy. Ultimately, I don't end up playing the game enough to really care anyways.
I enjoy TGC... I've enjoyed the EA titles in the past. I have no doubt I'll continue to do so. Ultimately for me though, once RMPGATour is released, I don't see myself going back to TGC.. unless there's a serious lack of courses in RMPGA... The only way that's a knock on TGC, is because of the poor visuals IMO.Miami Dolphins - Detroit Red Wings - Toronto Blue Jays - Michigan Wolverines - CANADAComment

I recommend waiting to make a decision until EA's game comes out. No one knows how good the game will be yet.Comment

Re: Golf Club or EA PGA ?
I bought TGC day one and for me, its a bit of a soulless experience. It's a good challenge and some of the real courses that have been re-created in the game are alot of fun to play. So are most of the HB Studios courses.
For me, the issue is how much time I can invest into the game and there's weeks where I might be able to play 2 rounds and then there's weeks where I can play as many as my heart desires. For those reasons, I end up playing single rounds or the Tours but those quickly become boring. Especially the Tours where the scores are nowhere within reach.
For me, the EA games have always been challenging if played on the right settings and I liked being able to come home and play a true Career mode or even jump online for a round or two, if that's all I have time for. I bought TGC to support the dev team because of the indie status of the title, because they're Canadian and because when I do have the itch to play a golf game, TGC fills the need. But I'm not able to play it for too long and if I had to choose one, I'd go with RM.

One game is out one is not...impossible to compare.
If you have like TW Golf in the past then you will likely enjoy EA PGA Golf....I compare The Golf Club to more like the Links Golf PC game somewhat.
I am happy with the golf club and bought the $10 DLC. It plays a great game of golf and the courses created by people in the community. Endless plays here.Former Bison, Argonaut, TSN and Sportsnet employee.

Depends on it you want to blow stuff up or not...
Seriously though... I'm certainly going to give RM a try eventually. Nothing wrong with playing both if they both are enjoyable.Joshua:

Re: Golf Club or EA PGA ?
I've had interest in TCG, but it seems a little pricey for a low budget title. I definitely am a fan of competition for sports games, but I just don't know about this one. The customization seems really cool, don't know how much I would use it, though. I've said all along a demo could convince me to buy it but it's not in the cards. Their loss.
I've enjoyed the EA golf games in the past, even with frustrations with all the DLC and a few other problems. I know it's cool to hate on EA Sports, but is an ugly, glitchy indie golf game really better than the EA game will be?Comment

TGC is neither "ugly" or "glitchy' mate, it's simply one of the finest, most organic sports simulators I've ever played. It may be a bit simplistic compared to EA golf, as there are no fancy clothes or club shafts to choose from, but the physics engine is superb and the concept of everyone playing on the same set of skills (no reward for leveling up because you can spend 40 hours a week playing while I can only spend 10), your skills on the course dictate the end result (of course players who spend more time practicing and studying a course will have an advantage, as you should).
And the virtually unlimited number of courses (68k+ to date) make the replay value well worth the paltry $40 investment. But if you enjoy pink graphite shafts on your putter while wearing a Sponge Bob Square Pants costume while you shoot -23 on Chambers Bay then more power to you.Comment

You are missing out on a great game with really good developer support. I am on the fence with the EA game right now.I've had interest in TCG, but it seems a little pricey for a low budget title. Re: Golf Club or EA PGA ?
You know, bashing EA's games doesn't make me want to play non EA games. Same thing with 2K fanboys and their EA hate
I don't care who makes the game, I just want to enjoy it. Maybe I'm a little bit more sour on The Golf Club than I should be, but I just haven't seen anything that convinced me to buy it.
Same thing with Super Mega Baseball. I was hesitant, but when it when on sale for under $5, I jumped on it. I don't know if it is worth $20, but it is a lot of fun. Maybe if The Golf Club goes down in price or on sale I will buy it, too.Comment

Re: Golf Club or EA PGA ?
Considering a $9.99 DLC was just released it likely won't be seeing a price drop any time soon, nor should it. It's great value for what it offers. You know, bashing EA's games doesn't make me want to play non EA games. Same thing with 2K fanboys and their EA hate

I don't own shares in HB nor EA so I have no vested interest in persuading you to play on game or the other. Opinions on TGC are out there and until you see a review or get to play EA's game you can only speculate how the game plays.Former Bison, Argonaut, TSN and Sportsnet employee.

Re: Golf Club or EA PGA ?
I agree with the last post. I have never played a more realistic sum type game on any sport. I thought I would need the real courses and licenses but I don't miss it at all. With games now $79.99 before tax in Canada I will be waiting for a price drop on Rory.
