Goalies in the EA NHL series need a major revamping, both on-ice and off-ice. One of the touted features for NHL 16 was indeed a revamping of goalies on-ice. EA has neither a stellar reputation nor a good base for goalies. That being said, here's how I would rework goalies—starting off the ice.
Let's start with styles. There are currently three goaltending styles in NHL 15: Hybrid, Butterfly, and Stand Up. Out of 68 goalies who started the game on an NHL roster, none are labeled as a Stand Up goalie, two (Viktor Fasth and Roberto Luongo) are labeled as Butterfly goalies, and the remaining 66 are labeled as Hybrid goalies.
Mover versus Reactor
That does not accurately differentiate between each goalie's respective style. When Henrik Lundqvist, who stands up more than any other goalie and is known for his deep (inside out) style, is grouped in the same category as Jonathan Quick, that immediately points to a problem in the generalized grouping. It's doubtful that we'll see personalized styles, as only Eddie Lack was brought in for Motion-Capturing—a safe choice, unexceptional.

We salute you too, Marty
The current styles make even less sense when one remembers that Stand Up has been obsolete for a while and its last remaining semi-practitioner in Martin Brodeur is retired. Butterfly is not necessarily even a style, more of a position and method; while a good case is made for it as a style, it's not the proper term and does not hold enough merit alone to save itself. As we mentioned with Lundqvist and Quick, Hybrid is much too general a term.
With those points in mind, I would change the styles from the current three to:
- Reflex - goalies who make most of their saves based on reflexes; higher attributes in categories such as glove high and stick high, lower attributes in categories such as agility. An example would be Henrik Lundqvist.
- Athletic - goalies who are very mobile; higher attributes in categories such as agility and recover, lower attributes in categories such as five hole and durability. An example would be Jonathan Quick.
- Positional - goalies who rely on positioning and technique; higher attributes in qualities such as angles and rebound control, lower attributes such as agility and breakaway. An example would be Roberto Luongo (except in the SC Finals, but that's for another time).
The advantage of the new styles is that goalies are much better stylized. Rather than being termed generic "hybrids," goalies are stylized with a name that much more accurately reflects their real-life play style.
