    Leaked WWE Announcement for Commentators

It's a LONG read, so I put it in spoiler tags. Long read, but interesting to read all the strict policies for commentators. No wonder commentary sucks in WWE.

If we go by those guidelines, every single great announcer in the history of wrestling wouldn't even make it to the front door at WWE. It's no wonder the commentary has been so wretched for years now.

To be fair a lot of this is from 2008.

WHC Jack Swagger? This is outdated, and most of today's commentary breaks this stuff anyway.

Yeah they've changed a lot of their 'guidelines' ... I honestly say let the announcers just sound like fans, just don't let them break kayfabe and use terms like heel or face when describing a likable or unlikable character

Outdated sure, but you can see the general guideline for this and just how strict wwe is on all these things

Lucha Underground does a good job of this.

Something crazy happened on it once and Vampiro got up from the announcer table, got into the crowd and started chanting with them.

I was listening to an episode of Jim Ross' podcast which was part one of a 2 part interview with Mike Tenay (AWESOME STUFF BTW!) and they both were of the opinion that the best way to do announcing is to make it feel as much like a real sporting event as possible. You have to tether the wrestling event to reality and quit with the self promotion and lame, bland announcing.

BTW I keep hearing about this Lucha Underground what is it exactly?

Reading this, and it's no wonder why the show is absolute trash now. Cookie-cutter, pre-fab, manufactured garbage.

Happy to learn it's not just getting older.

Ross is most famous for his WWE work, but he did a phenomenal job in NWA/WCW of tying in real world stuff with the matches, he would always make it a point to bring up where guys went to college and if they played any sports, and in Mike Rotando's case, if they won any punt pass kick competitions as a kid. The WWE on the other hand, especially in years past has always felt like it takes place in an alternate universe. There was a noticeable style change in Ross when he came over to WWE. With that being said, JR still found a way to take the WWE style and make it work

I agree completely, he found a way to merge both styles and be unique unto himself. I'm not expecting or wanting Cole to be a Ross clone but it wouldn't kill the WWE to try to make it seem more real rather than some artificial product.

Another thing is that they need someone with "the voice". So even if they aren't entirely interesting, just hearing their voice call things will be sound better.

For me at least,I find like the commentators I like in sports are more about people who have "the voice" over people who are good cause of how they call the action. Like for me, I like listening to people such as Kevin Harlan,Marv Albert,Bob Cole,Joe Buck(I know ppl hate him alot, but I'm just using him in this example) simply cause I feel like they have "the voice" that makes the commentary better. Not saying one or more of those guys aren't interesting to listen to, but it's just an example of how WWE needs some interesting sounding people on commentary.

I know commentators aren't supposed to outshine the superstars, but why can't they just have good ones who can call the action?

Annoying watching Raw hearing them get off topic so often,or start namedropping for no reason at all, or worse...bringing up references from the 1970s or something(not even wrestling related references, just random philosophy or golf or racecar reference or something random like that)

JR said some crazy stuff and went overboard from time to time but he made me believe he had no beforehand knowledge of what was going on. Also, whatever was happening in the ring was super important.

The current commentary just seems stale and annoying.

WWE wants the commentators to act like fans and have fun, yet there's so many guidelines and rules in place it stifles any fun/creativity.

Go back and listen to Gorilla Monsoon and Jim Ross, two of the best-ever in the WWE. A nice balance of calling the in-ring action, putting over the talent and also discussing upcoming matches/ongoing angles.
