Devils 3, Jets 1 in Gritty Opening Night For New Jersey
The Devils played a hard-forechecking game for the entire 60 minutes, and, spurred by a strong power play, sent the Winnipeg Jets packing with a 3-1 win in the season and home opener. 2 of the Devils' 3 goals came with the man advantage, as Mike Cammalleri and Adam Henrique each scored a 5-on-4 marker (Cammalleri added an assist, finishing as second star). Travis Zajac scored the first goal of the game at even strength, and Drew Stafford saved Winnipeg from the goose egg, scoring the Jets' lone goal late in the 3rd. Cory Schneider won first star for a magnificent 41-save performance.

Devils Fight Back, But Backstrom, Capitals Salvage 2 In OT
The New Jersey Devils scored 2 goals in the 3rd period to send the game into overtime at 5-5, but Nicklas Backstrom fired home a rebound on a 4-on-3 overtime power play to salvage two points for the host Capitals. The goal concluded Backstrom's successful bid for a hat trick. Jacob Josefson, Stefan Matteau, Tuomo Ruutu, and Stephen Gionta all notched a goal and assist apiece, while Jordin Tootoo and Ryan Clowe added two assists in the loss.
