George Gervin Review and free badge slots

Hi, has anyone used Gervin? How does he look (especially in comparison with LBJ)

Does he has issues due to his low strength in driving or defense?

And also importantly, how many free badge slots does he come with?

Edit : Obviously I am talking about AS Gervin

I've got Gervin. He comes with 5 free badges slots.

I use him as a SG though, he has no problem driving to the basket and finishing at the rim. His high draw foul ability is an asset, if he doesn't finish he goes to the line.

The reason I use him as a SG is his low strength which will be a liability on D against LBJ and stronger SFs.

Have you ever tried him on SF?
5 Free badge slots is not great but it is ok... I don't know why but I miss MANY contested drives with plus I generally can't use him right on Offense. WIll probably try Gervin.

I haven't really used him as SF (pulled Barry), I haven't played RTTP much, mainly grinding the gauntlet.

The only reference I can give you is that in a Gauntlet game, he was faced with AS KD, and though I lost the game on a KD 3 pt shot, they kept trading punches through the entire game. He wasn't really overmatched by AS KD.

I don't know about anyone else but for some reason even though George gervin has a very high mid range rating he doesn't seem to hit them consistently for me. Even when he is open I constantly get B+ and B-. I have no idea why. Any suggestions?

you gotta get his release down.

I am an older member of this community...so when I was a lil boy, Gervin and Cooper were 2 guys I emulated. I was a huge Gervin fan.

That being said, this card doesn't play like a 95 overall card, no where near it. he is rated this high because of rebounding. He just doesn't have good animations or great release. he can't really get to the basket with ease. He is good in transition and effective when he CAN get to the basket because he is great finisher and draws fouls. Other than that, he is not the scoring machine as in real life. Some of these players need better animations and tendencies. Like Iceman should have finger-roll like Steph. Iceman had an assortment of layups IRL that were virtually unstoppable. Some of these cards have no true in-game distinctions. He comes of the bench for me, but the biggest flaw...which is pretty big is that his shot creating ability is lacking and he doesn't come with enough badges or animations.

True, I tried him in 2 games... He seemed to have difficulties driving to the basket, even initiating a lay-up. I sold him back with a 5k loss

right. and that was his whole game IRL. he was a slasher. he cant get past anybody. not to mention I cant shoot with him at all. he misses wide open shots. you have to get his release down but it isnt worth waiting to get it down because he doesnt have anything else to keep him going in the meantime. pretty much just a fast break player and cutter, lol. he doesnt have any creative dribble animations that I have seen. he shouldve came with more badges, including Tear Dropper. his fingeroll animation should be like Steph except Gervin was better with it in traffic and from long range. this is one of 2k's problem with cards. this card is nothing more than Bulls version with boosted stats. stats alone dont make a card. animations and tendencies are critical in how they play.

you guys are sleeping on his post control. I cant stop scoring with gervin in the post. He has basic but hard to block dunks and good layups. He draws fouls and has a great free throw. I dont shoot much in 2k i stay in the paint and hes a perfect third post player.

No one claims this is a terrible card. But it is a card just 1 point from diamond tier, I believe what synistr and I agree on, is that offensively wise you would expect this card to thrive in driving. But it doesn't. Durant thrives offensively in all aspects.

There are things that can not be seen statswise. LBJ was a beast in 2k15. If you could get in front of your defender and initiate a lay-up you were certain for 2points. This is not the case for 2k16 for LBJ. It is for Durant though at least for me, even though Durant has -35 in strength. LBJ has some strange animations and misses many semi-contested lay-ups. Also gets very easily blocked on fast breaks.

Have you ever seen LBJ getting blocked from behind in a fast break? It has happened so many times to me that I caught myself passing the ball to wall that is trailing.

Am I a good player? Probably not (even though i have won seed 1). Could I do something better? (use the right stick instead of button etc)? Sure I could.

                    I just don't get it.

Same thing applied to Gervin and to me applies for MANY historical players Isiah Thomas included.

They seem to miss an animation to iniatiate drive. I press the button, but they will hesitate. What a, I doing wrong? 87 rated Wall drives, 95 rated Isiah with ALL driving stats/badges better will pause after a small contact. Same with Gervin.

It seems as all/most current players have their signature moves, but historic players are just "dummy" same players with updated height/face and stats.

yeah, me and Kabamaru pretty much agree on this. your style of play affords that. right now I am not posting up guards. then there are some great guards who were known more for posting up than Gervin, like Glove. Also, Adrian Dantley had serious post game. Gervin had post game too but he was a finesse driver and finisher and a great mid-range creator in real life. its ironic they mentioned HOF scale, but most of the Historics and HOFers pale in comparison to current players, especially when it comes to animations. I want a card to play more like it did IRL and the things Gervin was great at, this card struggles with.

Re: George Gervin Review and free badge slots

Gervin is amazing at the rim and in transition for me. And pretty much all greens from mid range, but I'm running him off ball screens and finding him on kickouts rather than creating shots with his dribble moves. Isolation type of game isn't really effective in 2K16 anyway, so I'm not sure it's fair to demand that he be able to create open looks on his own. You can create driving lanes for him by making defenders close on him within your offense. He isn't the quickest for sure though.

Timing on his shot reminds me of Kawhi (a bit long but masterable). All in all, I think he's a beastly value for 50-60k. Solid on defense and a great #1 or #2 option on offense.

I'd like to hear what others badged him with. I had a hard time because he probably did get shafted a bit, and he's one of those very versatile guys who feels like a blank slate when you have 5 free slots. I did: Unfazed, Deadeye, PLD... and the one I bought already had Fade Ace and Corner Specialist. Definitely considered Posterizer, Dimer, and Transition Finisher too.

its not fair to demand that based on how 2k created him but that was his game in real life, spin dribbles, floaters, etc...he didnt average 25ppg in 12 seasons coming off ball screens. he was a one on one scoring machine. at least agree with me on this...should he at least have Steph layup animation? he should have every layup animation there is and he should have some better dribbling. he was the master of the layup/fingeroll.

you just feel cheated when a player rated that high cant do certain things that he was good at. I could get plenty of other cheaper players if I want to post up or run off screens. Not what I expected from this card, nor what I need from it.

Agreed, the lack of specific animations on legends is annoying and showcases laziness on 2K's part. Given the sheer amount of animations that are in the game (for mypark/career players etc.) it's ridiculous that elite cards all have the same lame crossovers like last year. But he's still probably one of the very best layup finishers out right now.

no question he is an elite finisher, but he cant get to the rim on his own. he needs someone to get the ball to him. I have been trying to create with him and its been difficult. I just started using him recently though. but a 95 rated card with his scoring ability should be able to play a less restricted type offense. a lot of current players with lower stats can get to the rim a lot easier than he can, like Reke or Lou Williams. its not about the stats, its about the packages these cards have. didnt even come with any dribbling badges, lol. again, this is just a repackaged Bulls version with boosted stats. they didnt do that for Melo though. no. his Amethyst has different animations than the Gold.
