First Time Baseball Video Game Player

Ok so this is my first time ever looking to purchase a baseball game as I just recently have taken a liking to the game of baseball. I am normally a NBA 2k and Madden player. I use to watch occasionally growing up when Bonds, McGwire, Sosa and Griffey were cranking out home runs left and right. Anyways based off the information you guys have gathered do you really think it's necessary for me to buy The Show 16 or can I get by with 15. Is 16 that much more of an improvement just based off the info they've given so far. All thought appreciated. Thanks

Honestly, it probably depends on your budget and how much you are willing to spend. Pretty much everyone here -- myself included -- will tell you there are enough improvements in 16 to warrant a purchase, but if you're a first-time player you'll be able to find 15 for sub-$20 soon enough. 15 is still an incredible game and will give you a good idea of what a modern baseball video game is like.

So basically, is it worth the extra $40 to have the latest and greatest version of The Show? That's for you to decide.

15 is a fine game. Whether it would work for you probably depends on the mode you want to play.

They have improved most of the game modes in 16 though and many of us feel their favorite mode was improved enough to warrant a new purchase.

RTTS - Several improvements have been added to speed up gameplay (not going to the simulation screen between attempts, playing an entire series without going back to the menu system). They also added in Showtime for those who are interested.

Diamond Dynasty - They have added two new game modes, including an offline mode for those of use who do not do much online play. They have added more cards, including legends and rookie and prime throwback cards for current players.

Franchise - Expanded stats, Career Stats, player morale.

Add in to those modes the ability to import your own music this year, the ability to play with open and closed roofs for those stadiums with the option, classic stadiums, captains method for a more dynamic advancement system.

MLB 15 is perfectly serviceable in all those modes though, although I am not sure if Online Diamond Dynasty games in 15 will be viable when the new version is released.

Thanks. I do see 15 for $20 currently I guess I just didn't want to waste money on a significantly inferior game. I guess like you stated I want to get the best impression of modern baseball so that's where the indecision came in

15 is an EXCELLENT game. If you find you really like it, you can always upgrade to 16 when it goes on sale somewhere.

One word - MLB The Show can be difficult. There is a Beginner difficulty that eases you into it. Don't worry if you find yourself using Beginner or Rookie difficulty. And don't be afraid to play around with the large selection of camera options, gameplay options, sliders, etc. One thing the Show has in common with NBA 2k is the great ability for customization of what you want your gameplay experience to be.

Thanks for that bit of info. I just recently told a friend who just started playing 2k to start on rookie because the CPU will abuse you.

I also plan on joining The Show team starting with 16. With your comments about the difficulty settings, is the learning curve that steep?

It definitely is. The Show 14 is the first one I played (stuck on Xbox before that). Took me until half into 15 to get through veteran and I'm now playing on all-star. The first year I was playing I swung at everything. Gotta be patient. You can get used to the controls fairly easily if you pick ones you're comfortable with. Even with my struggles, the game is incredibly fun, definitely get it.

The cool thing is -- and I wish other sports games would adapt this -- is that The Show features Dynamic Difficulty, which automatically adapts to your skill level for both pitching and batting, and does a pretty good job of it. So for example, say you start out at Beginner, which is literally throwing you fastballs over the plate every pitch. Once you get the timing down, the game recognizes this and automatically ups the skill level.

You can disable Dynamic Difficulty, but I've kept it on two years running and it's worked out great.

When I decided to try the Show a few years back, I bought the prior year version. I'd played enough Madden to know updates are never as a earth shattering as they sound. I figured $20 was a good way to see if I'd like it. I played casually for a while but have become an annual buyer now. In fact, I like the show so much I haven't bought a new Madden since 2013.

If you get 15 and love it, you might have that feeling in your stomach that says "Man I should have gotten 16". I was actually going to skip this year, but after the info and streams I pre ordered it.
If you get 16 you will get the supreme game. A full cycle of work for the first time on ps4. All the new animations, graphics, plays, player and team real life actions, Physics based rendering, That fancy humanIk where the players feet make contact with the ground and not just slide. Smarter Telecasts and moooore.

I really appreciate all the suggestions. I have a feeling I'm really going to like this series. I'm seriously considering getting the 16 version after hearing this is the first full PS4 cycle

I bought MLB 13 for PS3 last October for a couple of bucks just to see if I like it. Now I got my PS4 just for 16. Really looking forward to it. I think you don't make a mistake by buying 16 directly, it will be a great game from my feeling

Well I've certainly been talked into skipping 15 and going strait to 16. I'm hearing lots of good things and everyone here seems very excited, slightly contagious!

If you love baseball just like myself I suggest 16. The improvements they made in gameplay alone and the player personalization is enough to spend the extra 40. As a gamer who was stuck with the 2k series and only played Xbox and was a "loyalist" to Xbox, I personally switched to PS4 just for the show because it is that good of a baseball game. I promise you, you will not be disappointed with 16.
