    How do I drive?

I'm posting this here since it's not getting any responses in the sticky:

Hey I'm pretty new to the NBA series and the NBA in general (just started watching regularly last year and I just started playing when 2k16 was given as a free game to PS+ members (which was amazing)) and I'm slowly learning how to get guus open for shots and whatnot. The PnR being my most used method. But strictly playing PnR gets boring fast and is only one aspect of scoring in basketball.

This leads me to my question. I really want to learn how to drive the lane and get to the basket for a layup or dunk. My problem is that when playing against the AI, it seems like two things are happening:

    a. My defender is glued to me and I can't get around him. Ibe been working on this somewhat using Sam Pham's crossovers to try and catch my defender off guard but it hasn't been working that well. I also don't think every drive should be the result of a crossover and a broken ankle.

    B. Other defenders other than my guy are clogging the lane and it seems like said lane is non existant. So I've been forced to pass the ball around endlessly (which I know is a good thing but every basketball player needs to know how to drive.)

Any detailed help would be greatly appreciated. I'm currently playing on All-star as I try to get better at the game.

it's impossible to drive from a triple threat stance with someone like kobe or jordan - first steps mean nothing in this game. your best bet driving is chaining together dribble moves from a stand-still and trying to capitalize on your defender's reaction. even then it's clunky and delayed and will result in you picking up your dribble half the time. either that or you'll veer of in a crazy angle and lose the ball off of your teammate's ankle. the online anti-cheese is killing the offline sim experience.

call for a pick, left bumper.
that helps you to get a step on your man

Otherwise, I like to use spins. drive right at an angle and spin clockwise to the left.

Or get into the post position and then drive out of it.
You should have your defender behind you, but it depends on your post control to some extent

I actually disagree. I attack from the triple threat with Melo all the time with good results. If you can read your defender, how he's playing you, and mix up your moves it will work. If you get into the triple threat and jab once then drive right every single time, you won't go anywhere.

The problem is, it was much better executed when Game launched in mid Sept. After few tuning patches fixing online cheese mostly, offline got broken beyond belief.

You can't burst past center, other point guard now. They got massive speed boost in lateral quickness so players like Horford are as fast as Irving going back to basket. Only works for AI teams. User teams get opposite ;]. And bump on opponent and your player stops. DEAD. Not something I see on NBA courts, 2k.

eh, it drives me pretty nuts. the cpu defender's recovery speed is overpowered and i just end up running into him picking up my dribble. maybe i'm just bad.

Lol i encountered the same. i manage to counter with a spin (rotate right stick) when the cpu defender cuts the lane. to my surprise i was able to free up the defender and i soared for dunk. Felt good on that play.

that was all-star level so i'm not sure if can replicate the same when i go SS

                Re: How do I drive?

I've tried going 1 on 1 iso against defenders from AS to HOF and it's impossible to get a 'first step' on them for the blow-by. It feels like CPU defenders have a lateral quickness boost or something (even tho the sliders don't show that).

I've had mismatches where the CPU switches like Porzingis on Westbrook and Westbrook still can't burn him on a blow-by on SS and HOF. On AS, it's actually possible, but the frequent bumping is still annoying.

You need to dribble moves to get by them for the dunk/layup/stop&pop. If you don't dribble and turn the corner as fast as possible around them, then you end up bumping into them and getting the bump animation where you pretty much pick up your dribble.

This year's 2K has issues with spacing the floor and bump animations. You pretty much can't weave through defenders like Curry or CP3 in the mid range area (between the paint and 3pt line) because there's no space and there's consistent bumping.
Also really ruins fast breaks because you're barrelling down the court with Lebron, then CPU defenders somehow catch up when they're either not as fast (bigs) or strong (guards), and Lebron can't finish a strong layup in transition without going into a silly fall-away layup animation.

Any way 2K can tweak the bumping? Like this is the thing that's creating clunkiness for me in the gameplay.

                  Re: How do I drive?

If we are talking OFFLINE I would suggest lowering the On Ball defense for the CPU and the Body sensitivity (?) slider for the user the "loosen uP" the defense and make it more skill/rating based to get by defenders.

If we are talking ONLINE or modes where you cant adjust the indivual sliders, I would recommend 1) as stated above use screens to get a step on defenders or 2) use alot of hesitattion, iso dribble moves and /or spin moves to free yourself when you have space (key word). That method is very rating driven - I can get by a defender using D Rose alot easier than if I were using Rondo for instance.

People... this is what I'm looking for. Actual pointers. Not, "Yeah I can't do it either." Lol. Although I appreciate the responses. Anyone else with tips on how to get by your defender? This is offline btw.

And I should also say that I don't want to mess with sliders to make it "easier", I just want to get better. I don't mind the body contact as I feel it's realistic. What perhaps isn't realistic is the ability of every single AI defender to move laterally.

I also cant drive no matter what...

When I bought this game it was alright and seemed pretty good but now for playing against the AI its just broken...
Defender stick to you like glue...

Dont know what they did but imo it broke the game.

Same thing with contested shots. Doing postgame fadeaways like Dirk, Kobe etc. is impossible. I know it needs to be balanced so you cant abuse it online but it should somehow be possible offline without setting the AI level way down...

                        Positioning.

I, like you OP, am new to NBA and 2k, but I have a 6'7 Sharpshooter MyPlayer, or play with the Lakers in Career mode, and online play with MyTeam.

The single most effective move I have found in this game are the jab steps and the upward dribble move on the right stick, the signature dribble or something.

signature dribble vs CPU it either makes them step back and give you the smallest crease to shoot or if you link it with a jab step (which is quite hard admittedly, very many way off shots doing this lol) you can then blow by.

A thing that used to always get me was if I was in the corner and saw a space to run in to, I would step out of bounds. Now I don't stand right in the corner but maybe 2 feet further from perfecting shooting spot, pump fake a shot, or jab step, then blow by under along the line to the basket, and either go for a lay up (which will often miss coz I still can't lay up lol - especially with my player) or kick it out to a person who's defender has bitten on the drive.

I do think the controls are a bit too clunky, and the player movement too, to say this is something that is effective frequently or consistently, but I have surprised myself sometimes by driving in this way.

Another way to effectively drive is to call an ISO play, try and avoid their lateral quickness (by using speedy PG or handler) and then just kick it out.

Again, I haven't learnt any playbooks so all ISO play calls are purely by chance but thats another technique, and again it isn't consistent.

                          a. to initiate a drive with a defender glued to u, there's no other way but to execute the crossover moves. for certain situations and improved ai, u cant repeat the same moves against the cpu defender. more than often or not, u need to incorporate a second crossover move after the first crossover. u can substitute the second cross with spin or behind the back if u are good with the stick controls.

in 2K16, it is possible to drive without a crossover. when yor teammate comes out of a offball screen and catches the pass (say, from paint to 3 pt line) and the defender is sticking to him, right after the catch u just drive (left stick preferably with turbo) at an angle pass the defender (towards baseline). i call it against the momentum drive and its very effective. u watch the warriors play irl and chef Curry does that a lot. unfortunately, this was nerfed in 2K17.

                          b. this is easy. run a play so u end up with some space to work on yor moves. iso plays are most common. if not, i'll recommend u work on yor moves at the wing area. if u notice yor teammates start to fill up the lane then just call for quick iso. i prefer running plays bcos the teammates are constantly cutting to open spots while i still have some open lane to work on the move. when the ai detects u keep repeating the drive to basket move, it'll crowd the paint with help defense. thats when i kick it out for open shot.

i'm not the crossover expert as my stick skills is jus so so but these are some tips i picked up during the 2K16 days. learned many tips from posters here

which team are u playing and at whoch level? the problems u mentioned looks like u are at HOF

                            1. call for a pick
                            2. as he is about there or ready to set it, start a dribble move combo, a simple crossover will usually do.
                            3. watch the defender, if he bumps into the screen, go the opposite way.... if he doesn't bump the screen then run around it so he does.
                            4. you're on your way to the hole

You don't need the dribble move but it makes it easier. Sometimes simply changing the ball from one hand to other will cause the defender to throw himself into the screen. lol

To be blunt, some of you all arent good at the game and claim things are "impossible". Getting to the rim, even against a center isnt a given, especially when they gap 3 feeet and in this day and age when the size difference between a PG an a C is maybe 7 inches....
