I think this is really just personal preference and depends on what things are important to you. Download both demos and see what makes more fun for you I would recommend. Also read some tests maybe.

When it comes to popularity, I think most people on this board play FIFA though.

It depends on what platform as well. If you have a PS4 for example you can play either but need to mess with Option files to get some licensing into the game. If you are on Xbox One you are just screwed and can really only play Fifa is you want licensing. If you are on PC the mods for PES are pretty cool and easy to install. FIFA this year (due to the Frostbite Engine) is not easily modded.

Platform aside, if you want licensing you are better off with FIFA. If you ONLY care about gameplay and nothing else, probably PES. Really have to ask yourself what you are looking to do and what you enjoy. Personally for me, graphics, licensing and presentation are huge for me so I go FIFA on Xbox One but my gaming PC can handle any game. PES with mods was my game of choice on PC last year. This year after trying both on PC, I am sticking with FIFA on Xbox one.

Hope it helps a little because it's not really black or white and personal preference may not be a factor when it comes to which console you are on. My best advice is to play every and all demos and watch youtube gameplay.

I had played nothing but Fifa since 2013, I then bought Fifa 2016 and it was the worst sports game I had ever purchased. As a result this year I purchased PES 2017 and it was wonderful until I realized in career mode they recycle the players (once players retire they bring them back as like 17 year olds .... This really annoyed me). I just bought Fifa 2017 today. Seems good so far, but am reading about all these bugs in career mode (as in game ending bugs where save files crash the game and you lose your career - that scares the hell out of me). Are these glitches rare?

played f17 for about 400 hours and 98% of that time has been in career mode. I always keep 3 save files for my career because I'm in 2026 in my current career. Never had any issues beside like a week ago when I couldn't get past a certain date and it would spin forever. That's why it's good to rotate between save files so you can always go back a week or two in game time if something like this happens.

                      Re: FIFA or PES ?

In the end - I bought both games this year, and finally feel like I have put enough time into both to comment.

For starters both games are really good this year and vast improvements over the 2016 versions, so despite any criticisms I have, I do like both games and am glad there are 2 options, I believe it is forcing both companies to step it up. I am very excited to see both in 2018, and I have already decided I will be buying both (and probably Sega’s Football Manager 2018 as well).

I think most of what you see from various reviews as an overview is spot on. In terms of an actual on the pitch match, PES is very very impressive. The gameplay, graphics, physics, visuals, etc .... are vastly superior to Fifa’s and look like they belong on a PS5. I wish Fifa had some better camera angle options. The only one I could find that works for me is end to end. On PES I use “Player2”. A match in PES feels very very real .... but with a lackluster career mode .... the question is what are you playing for?

Where Fifa is vastly superior is in game play modes like Career Mode. PES’s career mode is fun, but lack of any real scouting system, youth team management, a good transfer system, etc ... which takes away from it. Plus, I dont understand why they dont create additional league structures with unlicensed teams. If a lot of the teams they do have are unlicensed, why not put a generic German League 1 and German League 2, etc ... ? The biggest disappointment in PES comes from retiring players coming back as younger versions of themselves several years after they retire. Could we not have randomly generated some players based on templates and given them random names? In general Fifa = more leagues, more levels of play, more realistic seasons (including tournaments like the English cup and pre season tournaments), more entertaining financial management and transactions, and in general a more engrossing virtual universe.

                      Random Thoughts:

                      1) In PES I put a lot of time into creating my manager “Stewart Bagginsworth”. At no point during a game do you ever see him. He is only seen in report menus and on the occasional news feed story. In contrast , in Fifa you have the option to choose from like 9 different very generic templates, and ..... you see your manager all the time during games.

                      2) The Officiating in PES is terrible. I routinely have a player running with the ball get leveled and witness as they blow the whistle to call a foul. I think to myself, its about time they call something .... only to find out they called the foul on me. Likewise, I frequently take shots on goal etc ... that deflect off an opposing player, and they call a goal kick instead of a corner.

                      3) Injuries in PES never seem to happen (yes I have them turned on). I play as Sochaux (a ligue 2 French Team) .... I am not sure if anyone pays attention to French football or not, but you would think I would at least have some players faking the occasional injury . In contrast in Fifa, I lost 2 players for several months in the first “friendly” of the season.

                      4) In terms of the announcing .... while the commentary in Fifa is more substantive especially in a career mode talking about actual happenings in your virtual world etc ... , they lack any real excitement as to what is happening in the current game. I am the only one I have seen with this opinion, but I vastly prefer the commentary of PES. When I score a goal (which can be a lot of effort in PES), I feel like the announcers are right in the room with me and as excited as I am.

                      5) Certain Licensed Kits in PES can not be imported over. My idea was to import over the teams in league 2’s that would be relegated out in real life each year, then if the imported team was relegated in a future year, revert to the original. But you can not do this to licensed teams.

                      6) I know a lot of people seem to be impressed by “The Journey”, but that is actually the kind of addition that annoys me. With all the effort and data wasted on The Journey and Woman’s teams, Fifa could have added in The National League, Vanarama North and South, The Championnat National, additional national teams, etc ... . In general a lot of love could have been given to career mode instead.

                      7) Fifa’s Sound Track this year is terrible .... sorry if offensive, but just an opinion.

One thing I do like in PES is that I can create my own teams, kits, etc ... . I started a game in Football Manager in Vanarama South Division (English League Tier 6) ... created my team on PES in great detail (most players are like 45 to 50 ratings), and created somewhat generic versions of the other teams in my league with special attention to star players (in gerneral I made generic templates – CBathletic, CBdefensive, etc ... and matched them to the created Vanarama South teams as best I could). I then ran league. This was very fun, but as you can imagine the setup took like two weeks of my evenings after work. I then used the editor on Football Manager to manipulate the results and match my PES league play.
