Defensive legacy issue: Defensive 3 seconds is called too tight

    The rule is

"Any defensive player inside the 16-foot lane (painted area) must be actively guarding an opponent within three seconds."

    Actively guarding is defined as
"being positioned within arm's length of an offensive player and in a guarding position."

On face the game gets it right, however the NBA has such a liberal definition of 'arm's length' and 'actively guarding' that NBA 2k is often too strict by comparison. This is especially true when a player is sagging near someone who is not what the matchups or zones deem as their man. Just being a few feet from anyone and looking at the ball suffices in the NBA but is often a violation in the game.

I would argue that the CPU over compensates for how this is called which is one of the reasons help defense is often late or in the form of an inefficient double team.

Interesting- I thought the common complaint was that it's not called frequently enough?

Defensive 3 seconds gets called a lot quicker than offensive 3 seconds.

Offensive 3 seconds takes more like 5 or 6 seconds before a ref finally blows the whistle.

Yep, defensive 3 sec violation gets called when a defensive player is standing on the paint EVEN if he is actively face guarding someone (no contact happens). It should NOT be a violation.

Offensive 3 seconds is called very loosely in this game for sure. Very annoying when you have a big just camping down there forever. I don't see it being a problem defensively.

some possesions the Big is standing in the paint for 10 seconds with no whistle.

on the other Hand if i am guarding rudy gobert Top of the key and i sag Off to the free throw line with the onball defender i get called for defensive 3 very Quickly

My only issue with the 3 in the key calls are when my dude is stuck in an animation and I am screaming "JUST MOVE DAMN IT MOVE" as I desperately try to avoid the call

This is true. Guarding Dwight Howard just above the free throw line I sagged off and was called for 3 seconds even though I was clearly guarding my man. That may be the reason the AI plays up so tight defensively...

Agreed, defensive is way too tight. I'll add that on offense, the game has a habit of 'trapping' you in the key sometimes, where no matter how hard you try you can't get out in time to avoid the 3 second call. This may be why they call it so loosely.

Oh I've seen my share of 3 seconds against me sure...with players I'm not controlling. CPU on the other hand, I personally watch Dwight Howard stroll through the paint, get caught in a post up animation, come out of it...catch the ball pump fake TWICE then shoot.

AND to boot AND 1...and to the line he went
"I'm so lonely....I paid a hobo to spoon with me"

All you have to do is step out of the paint and then step back in for the time to restart. Don't see this as an issue
