    Salary cap issues?

So... I started a myleague as the Knicks and well, I was offered Whiteside for Kanter and another player, so I took it, since it was almost at the trade deadline...

Anyway... I know I'm losing Whiteside as he's chosen to Test FA this year (it's the season after I traded for him) and Porzingis is 'undecided' and expects 25.10 million. Would I be better off trading Whiteside to make sure I can get Porzingis resigned?

Also... how should I try to balance the salary cap? 1-2 players at 20+ million? Then aim for 5 million or less at the other positions?

    Right now I have...

    Porzingis at 5.7m
    Whiteside at 25.5m
    Hardaway Jr at 18m
    Gay at 10m
    Hernangomez at 1.5m
    Ntilikina at 4.16m
    Gibson at 3.7m

Everyone else is a 74 or lower...

Anyway... it just seems that in the FA at the season end every player that's 80+ wants 22-35 million... and I barely kept my team together. The one player I added was Rudy Gay, even then at 80 overall, I'm wondering if I made a mistake giving him 10 million. >_>

You should be able to keep Porzingis as you should have his Birdrights and thus should be able to sign him even when you are over the salary cap.

If you have the bird rights you can go after Whiteside in FA, but if not then trade him for cap space or longer contracts. Theres little to no chance to retain Whiteside if you dont have his bird rights.

How do you see if you have his bird rights in the game?

Alright, guys. Thanks. I'll have to see if I have Whiteside's bird rights or not.

Can someone explain to me the difference between "salary cap" and "hard salary cap". i am new to the game and was just in the offseason with the suns where i had 100 mil of "hard salary cap space" but only about 25million of salary cap space. attempting to sign paul george but didnt have enough room. When in offseason can you not use your "hard salary cap space" to sign free agents???

                  Thanks!

The salary cap is a soft cap, teams can go over by using exceptions. The hard salary cap is the absolute max.

However, the NBA doesnt actually have a hard cap, it only enforces a hard cap for an individual team in certain situations.
