SGO Video: Does Height Matter? (Hint: It doesn't)

Here's a video from SGO detailing the basic irrelevance of height in high-point catch animations. I honestly would not have ever thought to do this. I really have enjoyed Madden 19 and the new catch system since '16. But, it was really disappointing to see that height basically means nothing to catching a high pass when we see it matter in the NFL every week. Hopefully, we can keep improving this game.

Of course height doesn’t matter, since madden 16 with introduction of 3 catch type and them trying to do WR-DB interaction, it resulted in two man catching animations that don’t take into account player positioning, weight, momentum and height. They decided this was a smart idea, it should of never been introduced into the game. Made the game feel completely inorganic and contrived.

The only time I ever thought it mattered was in 16..where a physically dominant wr could draw a holding or PI against a DB..slowly but surely it got taken out to a point where we are at now..

Is that completely true, though? I remember in NCAA 14 I recruited a 6'7"" WR that had decent speed and he was a jump ball animal. I'd assume that if it had an advantage in MCAA back then it would in Madden also? Since that game basically had zero 2 man animations his jump animation put his hands 11+ feet in the air. It was incredible what he did for my otherwise stagnant offense.

Not sure about the NCAA series. In Madden I would look at the jump rating before the height. It's the same thing with weight a 150 lineman is going to basically block the same as a 300 pound lineman. If they have identical ratings. The height things doesnt bother me that much, it takes much more than just height. Kelvin Benjamin is 6"5' 245 and the guys a bust.

My experience with 50+ games at basically default sliders is that it makes a difference, just not consistently. If I have gronk lined up 1-1 with a small corner and I give it a high pass (lb1) he will jump up and come down with it 80+% of the time. If I do the same with edelman it's swatted away or picked.

Beware of these videos IMO. These are super small sample sizes and there are tiny variations from test to test. Just like in real football, the bigger player isn't always going to make that play if they are out of position, etc. Every play is different.

It did on PS2. I had drafted a 6'6 monster who won jump balls all the time. THe pre-recorded 2 man animations made height irrelevant

Gronk has a 96-97 catch in traffic. The issue is that catch in traffic should not really factor into jump balls in 1 on 1 situations. The fact that this one rating is so powerful is somewhat concerning.

What's up Mil!! I'm starting to wonder if anything matters in Madden and I definitely know that ratings mean nothing, I have suffered through years and years of 3rd string QB's playing like Tom Brady. Then they promote the game by saying things like "This year we have penalties that work" lol...end of rant. #KoosaSigningOut

Comparing Gronk and Edelman isn't apples and oranges or anything. Oh wait...


I'm not the brightest bulb, but I'm pretty sure anyone with an IQ over 80 can see the holes in this scientific and objective experiment.
