    All Time WAR Teams

Its been a minute since I've visited, but figured some of you might be interested to know that I am porting over the 25 man WAR teams into 18 to get ready for 19...and updating them as they've changed a bit in the couple of years since I have done it. I will also attempt to take on the 50 man this spring in 19 as well as an All Time roster that will have unique players only. Below is the updated sheet for all 30 teams (each in their own tab). Feel free to peruse and ask any questions if you like.

    Rosters

The Roster itself will include players that will be updated with as correct equipment, style of uniform, place of birth as accurate as I can be. Pitches will be taken from the Neyer/James Guide to Pitchers or fangraphs if current. All players are at the age they started with that respective team. I try to make the faces as realistic as possible (not cartoony)....I'm not as good as some others here, but I still stand by them.

So very glad to hear this! That is a terrific set. I remember making adjustments for live ball era players back on 17.

Hey Ray, a great book out now called "Now Taking the Field" written by Tom Stone. It has 30 man all-time teams for each franchise based on WAR among other stats. I'm certainly going to pick it up.

I'm almost done with the American League...the backup is in the vault...its only done through AL East. 99% of the players are already in....just fixing the salaries, lineups, rotations and adding a few players where needed.

Awesome! I think I'll extend your 25 man to a 30 man as in Tom Stone's book (12 pitchers/18 position players). Love the spreadsheet you put together here. Between that and Stone's book, I have plenty of info. Haven't decided if I'm going to stay all live ball or not. Might dip into the dead ball era. I'll have to see.

I would be very excited to see that. I'm expecting the book this week sometime, I hope. Besides porting it over to 18 and 19 once it comes out, I don't think I will do much else with the WAR set. I just don't enjoy it as much as I did my All Time set without the duplicate players.

I've been working on a spreadsheet for that to see what I would need...so far it seems like I'd need an additional 500 players....about half of those I should have in the old All Time set...the rest would have to be found and fixed or created from scratch.

                Here are is that spreadsheet.

Is your all-time set it in the vault for MLB 18? I found one in there that looks pretty good and thought it might be yours. Along with your set it looks like a good base for a project I'm kicking around. As well as making a top 30 WAR set, I'm thinking of rounding out each franchise after that with 75 man teams with a few exceptions. I would designate my top thirty WAR players on the 40 man roster list and then just fill out the other spots with the "best of the rest" using WAR as a guide but also including career achievements. My exceptions would be only doing a 50 man for Arizona, Tampa Bay, Colorado, and Florida. At the "A" level, I'd just have current day farmhands.

This roster consists of the top 5 starting pitchers by WAR, top 6 RP, top 2 catchers, top 7 IFs, and top 5 OF for every team.

For the infielders and outfielders, there were a few teams where a position did not meet the top 7 or top 5, but there are players filling the position as their secondary. For example, the Tigers did not have a 3B that met the criteria, so Miguel Cabrera covers 3B as he had played significant time there.

All CAPS on the MLB rosters were redone. Most of these CAPS came from DrSublime, Knight, Marsl, stecropper and others. With the upgrade to the CAP engine, some did not transfer over well, so I re-edited every single one for physical aspects, as well as equipment and attributes. Physical aspects and equipment was based off google image searches using multiple sources if possible. Attributes by B-R and Pitch types by Neyer/James Guide to pitchers, Brooksbaseball and fangraphs. The attributes are created with game play in mind, not sim play. Although I have watched a few sim games and they seem to play well.

For the relief pitchers, there was a bit of a snag. When I initially generated the roster, the default query was 60% starts for SP and 80% relief appearances for relievers. The left quite a few pitchers that did not meet either criteria but that had significant careers as well as WAR. A new query was run at 40% relief appearances for RPs to fix the issue. What that has done is lowered the quality of the relievers some, as most of these players are failed starters. At 80%, the relievers are specialized and have better attributes on the whole. So while I adjusted the rosters and added the new relievers, the 80% group are still on the rosters, just not on the 25 man.

As far as Legends and current players go, if they look good, they were kept, but did adjust attributes and equipment. If I felt they did not look good, I replaced them with CAPS I felt had a better overall look to them.

In the Legends free agent tab are the N league players that were also updated, just as the others.

The plan is to do the 50 man roster next, but I do plan on taking a significant break as going over 850 CAPS has been a bit much.

If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to ask.

The All Time WAR roster 25 has been updated for 2018 and is now in the vault.

Most of the above still applies for this roster. For this edition, the RP queries were once again run a bit different than the previous year. Also, some prominent names failed to make the rosters this year. In those instances, they are still in the organization, just not the top 25.

I have also created and taken some CAPS of some of the older players.

Adam Jones, Jose Bautista, Edwin Encarnacion, Evan Longoria and Troy Tulowitzki I was able to find some great CAPS in the vault that I just tweaked for age, ratings and equipment with some minor adjustments to physical appearance. I couldn't find decent ones for Ben Zobrist, Jose Reyes, Hanley Ramirez Zack Grienke and Ian Kinsler, so those were created specifically for this roster.

Let me know if there are any questions.

EDIT: Forgot to mention young David Wright...which is probably the best of the bunch...and was one of the ones I found in the vault.

Thats a project! No it is not my list, I only have the All Time WAR that just got uploaded.

I got the book finally and its great. A lot of the info I was already familiar with, but does offer some additional perspective. I did even use a few of his lineups for these rosters.
