Is Madden 20 Missing the 'Wow' Factor

Good article from Forbes summing up a lot of the sentiment I've been seeing around the forums on Madden 20.

I agree. I have no hype for this years game, but it seems like most of this has been brought on by being underwhelmed every year for a few years now.

I disagree with the author's opinions. I would prefer an early show of what a new game will feature, in regards to sports games, so feedback can be organized, evaluated, and hopefully, some changes can be made if needed.

I am not a fan of the "back of the box" big feature. I understand the reasoning from a marketing perspective, but that flashy marketing seems to force executives to tunnel their vision of the final product. This can leave many parts of a product left unattended, and you also risk a very poor game if that one super new feature is a failure.

To be honest, I haven't played any sports game in like the last 15 - 16 yrs that gave me the wow factor. Probably, NBA2K3 for the first time due to the graphics & movement. It's kinda like searching for that big foot, you'll never find. I dunno maybe cause I'm older no matter the sport it all gets like a rinse, wash, watered down sports cycle on repeat.

For me the gameplay and AI improvements determine the WOW factor every year, so I can't speak to Madden 20 at all yet. I also feel that ones general feeling toward the Madden franchise greatly influences the perspective you have toward each game. Those people who have a mostly negative feeling toward Madden are going to require something that they perceive as spectacular to not always have an initial blase feeling toward each years offerings.

Do this today: Instead of $%*#!@& on a game you're not going to play or movie you're not going to watch, say something good about a piece of media you're excited about.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

This seems to be the sentiment from most people but oddly enough EA has my attention more this year than they have for years. I’ve had the same 4 or 5 request now for about 5 years straight now and this year player differentiation is one of their main focuses. I have been a loud voice about this for many years now. This with stretched ratings, improved pass rush, ball trajectory, improved RPM and scenario engine is enough for make to pay attention.

Obviously EA has to prove to me this all works but I’m hoping for the best and expecting to be severely disappointed. But my point remains, the hype my not be there but in the end, we may get more out of this year then we have in a generation.

Mtmetcalf hit the nail on the head for me.

The differentation of the superstars vs avg Joe's is something I've been wanting for awhile and more of a ratings spread.

Gameplay is king for me and everything else is icing on the cake.

And something that 4thqtr mentioned too, WOW factor to me is something that is eye popping, back of the box feature. I would consider a halftime show a back of the box feature that I know the author is looking for.

I think presentation starts in the middle of June, based on what I saw someone post on here. It would be a shame not to have a presentation blog.

Give me boring old gameplay improvements over whatever the latest flashy arcade "wow factor" might be.

Re: Is Madden 20 Missing the 'Wow' Factor

How can I possibly be "Wowed" by anything Madden 20 is offering when not even a year ago, THIS is what they gave us:

                    <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ZsYdq7GtE3E" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

How can any logical person look at their most recent history of incompetence/neglect and expect that all of sudden, EA has finally turned a complete 180 less than a year after giving us one of the most bug-ridden games in Madden history?

They've given no gameplay videos. Their reveal trailer featured some no-name guy spending a minute yabbering on about nothing that relates to the game. The same reveal only featured 6 SECONDS of "in-game" canned presentation shots.

They're once again re-introducing past features like '08 "weapons" and "signature throwing animations" and painting them like they're new. It didn't take a genius to see Longshot was a garbage idea from the start and they wasted 2 years of time/resources on a stupid story-mode that no one asked for in the first place. For h*cks sake, they're talking about "boss battles". BOSS BATTLES.

Combine all this w/ EA's short attention span when it comes to any new feature and declining support once it's no longer marketable, I don't see how anyone can be excited about it this year.

Re: Is Madden 20 Missing the 'Wow' Factor

After playing the last three installments, I can safely say I have Madden-fatigue. Nothing has the "wow" factor anymore for me. I haven't been satisfied with the game-play over the last two years. This new QB-Superstar-hybrid they're featuring is good; it's something new that might brings some life back into the series, but it's been done before, and most importantly, it's been done better.

Which might be a stretch seeing as the game hasn't even come out, yet, but I honestly doubt it'll have the depth of the previous years' PS2 Superstar mode.

Maybe I'll take a gap year, come back, and enjoy the game like I did with 17. But I hope you guys enjoy whatever comes out. It's a hard pass for me.

The video was actually pretty funny, but they didn't do a very good job (I thought the 2k one was better). As far as showing gameplay they haven't even had EA play. They never would show game play until E3 back in the day, so not sure why that's such a big deal for ppl when they don't see it 3 -4 months in advance which they never have done ever. Never played Longshot, but there are ppl out there that enjoyed it.

For me, it is just a paradox. They could wow me with their features and wow me on paper but then I would be reserved on how they implement it. My single biggest complaint has always been I want players to play the way their ratings suggest the should play. THen two years ago they came out w/ simulation, arcade, competitive mode... with simumlation mode saying "players will play to their ratings" I was so excited. But nope... LBs still cover the entire field. I still need to adjust sliders.

After that, I was done w/ trusting them and took the "I will see how it goes after I play the game" mindset.

So basically, I will only be convinced after I play the game.

If they remove/fix things that are not broken, like aggressive and aware wide receivers for one, and add things that are not working exceptionally well like 'true step' like they do every year, I'm going to SMH and say 'Wow...'.

If they added something incredible like being able to import custom rosters from previous year(s), then I would say 'WOW!'

Madden fatigue is what I’ve been experiencing for years. This game started with Madden 06 and even moving to PS4/Xbox One got us a port of a very mediocre game.

Even the greatest games get tiresome eventually and Madden hasn’t really been that since the ps2 era. I don’t think it’s possible for it to achieve a “wow” factor based on yearly upgrades. The football genre won’t get that until something brand new hits store shelves.
