The Story of GM Griff - Chicago Bulls General Manager

The Story of GM Griff - Chicago Bulls General Manager

So its been a while since i've done one of these on here, 2017 to be exact. Im gonna try and give it another whirl, ive always enjoyed writing (Even though im a poor writer) and at the end of this 2k, i need something to keep me interested in my myleague's.

The last time i was the Head Coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, but this time im gonna go east, to the Chicago Bulls, and be their General Manager. I feel like the team is going in the right direction but just needs another nudge, so its the perfect spot for me to come in.

    Essentials
    Difficulty: Superstar
    Playing time: 10 Min
    Simulation time: 12 Min

I will be using the ''Start Today'' Option, I wont change the lottery to the Real Life outcome, as i'd like it to be a little different

    Chapter 1
    Offseason begins

I woke up in my appartment to the sound birds chirping

''Ah, my first day as a General Manager, i said.''

When i heard that Gar was effectively stepping down because of personal reasons yesterday, i couldn't believe they appointed me as his succesor for the time being, a ''trial period'' is what they called it. to me it didn't matter what they called it, i was going to prove to them that i have what it takes.

I grabbed my coffee and opened up my laptop, to my surprise there was an email from my assistant that Read:

      Chapter 2
Our fate is in the ping pong balls

The NBA draft is something that can make or break a GM's career. Do you select Derrick Rose or Anthony Bennett, Hasheem Thabeet or James Harden. So the draft lottery being on literally the first day of my new job, was as stressful as you could imagine.

At 9:15 AM i entered meeting room 4A, waiting on me were Noah Finley (The Head Scout) and the rest of the scouting group.

''How nice of you to finally show up!''
      the room was silent.
      ''.......Hahahahahaha''
      Everyone started laughing.
''Take a seat, we have a draft board to go over''

Me and Noah had been good friends ever since i started working here in Chicago two years ago, so after my promotion i expected him to needle me as much as he could, thats just how our friendship works.

We ended up looking at game-tape, everyone shared their favorite draftees and we shared some general knowledge about the upcoming draft.
Our odds said we were going to be looking at the number 4 pick, which was more than ok considering how stacked this draft was suppose to be.

Later that evening it was time for the Lottery, here's what happened.

5th wasnt the greatest spot to be at, somewhere deep inside i really wanted to slip into that top three, but i dont think the difference between 4 and 5 is going to be huge. We had our favorite players and we felt both would still be available at 5.

The next day i had a meeting with Jim Boylen, after about three hours of talking about the future, i decided that i was going to let Jim serve out his contract (1yr / $2.65M) and after that we see how we performed and decide from there.

We always wanted to pick Coby White if we fell out of the Top 2. We probably couldve picked him a little lower, but even though the celtics offered us their number 8 and 12 pick, we didnt want to risk losing out on Coby, we have enough young talent in every position BUT point guard, and fell in love with Coby early on in the season.

With our second round pick we selected Alen Smailagic out of Serbia, A rim protecting center who we felt dropped lower than he should've, so we are happy to have him.

I can't tell you about everything that happened in free agency, but i'll give you the rundown of what happened for us and what happened in the league around us.

        Bulls Free Agency

Bulls accept Walter Lemon Jr.'s $1.82m team option
Bulls accept Timothy Luwawu-Cabarrot's $2.53m team option
Bulls sign Taj Gibson to 2yr/$15.01M deal (Second year is team option)

Yea that was it. we just signed Taj because we needed some depth behind lauri, and bringing him back was something the fans would love. But besides that our Roster is filled with youth that we all want to give playing time this year, so we decided we werent going to go crazy (Not that we could with Porter and Felicio's contracts).

        Noteworthy signings around the league

Raptors re-sign Kawhi Leonard to 4yr/$126.99M deal
Celtics re-sign Kyrie Irving to 4yr/$131.78M deal
Lakers sign Klay Thompson to 4yr/$133.44M deal
Clippers sign Kevin Durant to 3yr/$114.05M deal
Knicks sign Demarcus Cousins to 3yr/$97.75M deal

Re: The Story of GM Griff - Chicago Bulls General Manager

          Chapter 4
          Opening Day

''...Welcome to the Scotiabank Arena for opening day of the 2019-2020 NBA season as the reigning champions Toronto Raptors try to hold off the young and exciting Chicago Bulls!''

''Damn'' i thought. Opening day away from home against the reigning champs, Sure nobody was expecting us to win this game, or be good this year, but there is always pressure.

We hadn't won a playoff game since 2015, and fans were starting to grow a little more impatient every year. After losing Fan favorite Derrick Rose to New York and Later Jimmy Butler to Minnesota, people were certainly not happy with the front office, and wanted to see some winning basketball at this point.

What are my expectations for this years squad? im thinking grow the young guys and maybe scrape into the playoffs, but probably not. The Board and Fans saw this a little differently though. Earlyer this week i was in a meeting with the Board, they ended up telling me that they were going to expect some winning basketball in the near future, as vague as that sounds i knew what they meant. They were asking for playoffs this year.

This was already stressing me out, how is this squad going to ever reach the playoffs without me making moves? On the other hand i dont want to mess up our young core, who in give or take 2-3 years could be the home to 3 or 4 All-Star's!

Anyway, now is not the time, the game is about to start, lets see if we can lose to the Raptors with grace....

Personally, i think we did pretty well. I mean yea we were not efficient from the field and from three, but thats what happens when a young team plays against last year's best defensive team. We worked hard in the paint, grabbing boards on offense and defense.

          My highlighted players

          Z. LaVine: Struggled massively in the first quarter but regrouped in the second half, also showed improvement in ability to pass when he's cold.
          L. Markkanen: You could see he worked on his post game this summer, and Jim was ready to highlight it, fantastic game for Lauri
          C. Hutchinson: Hard worker, is everywhere on the court, improvement in Cutting ability is good to see.
          C. White: Pretty bad debut, couldnt find his shot from outside. Worked well inside though, and didnt turn the ball over at all. but i need more from him

ESPN's top three players we could see getting moved this season

            1. BEN SIMMONS - PHILADELPHIA 76ERS

Sources tell ESPN people are growing increasingly frustrated in Philadelphia, especially with Ben Simmons' fit together with Joel Embiid and Jimmy Butler. Reports coming out that Simmons and Embiid are not on good terms anymore, and its causing stress in the locker room.

            2. ANDRE DRUMMOND AND/OR BLAKE GRIFFIN - DETROIT PISTONS
Sources tell ESPN that the Pistons will be looking for assets to start their Rebuild, not confident anymore that this duo will get any type of success in the way the roster is set up right now

            3. ANDREW WIGGINS - MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES
Sources tell ESPN its more of a question of who is willing to take Wiggins. Timberwolves have reportedly been shopping him around since the Draft, but are yet to find a suitor. Wiggins is averaging 12.2pts, 4.4rpg and 0.6apg this year. Wiggins is on a 4yr/$122.24M deal.

              BEN SIMMONS: ''I WANT OUT''

              Nov 21, 2019
A shocker was just send through the entire NBA, when Ben Simmons publicly admitted that he wanted to be traded. The 23-year old never spoke about the rumours ongoing about the sixers locker room, until tonight.

This interview is from his post-game press conference, merely 30 minutes after the media was informed of his request

''It's not working anymore, we've tried, trust me, we did try.''

''So how did this come about?''

''Mostly our gameplay, i had no problems with him and the way he(Embiid) was playing, but he certainly did with me. I'm not here to get into too much detail about the reasons for our altercations though.''

              he continued..

''At the end of the day we both went to the board and told them that it was going to be either me or him. And the rest is history''

              ''It ended up becoming you?''

              ''Yes.''

Simmons clearly still rattled, walked off the stage into the locker rooms.

                Chapter 5
                Zachary

                ''This changes everything''

Let me explain. Yesterday the news broke that Ben Simmons requested a trade and it kept me up all night, i was in meetings with everyone, from scouts to the training staff and the coaches. It all came down to the same thing, we need to see if Ben is in any way shape or form available to us.

Early in the morning i ended up calling the 76ers front office to see what they were asking for, and dont get me wrong, it was ALOT.

It had to be a deal containing Markkanen or LaVine, Coby White and a First round pick. Now Lauri was always going to be off-limits in a deal like this, but even though Zach was our best player, he never looked like a superstar caliber player, hence we had to think about this.

I didnt have much time to think as we were playing the rival Pistons tonight away from home, so i had to continue thinking and looking at stats on the plane. Coby and the pick we were more than fine with, Coby really didnt fit the system we were playing in, as he kind of dissapointed as a playmaker, and that was really the role he was playing alongside LaVine, his defense also really wasnt up to par. So at the end of the day i kept staring at one report card, comparing the exact stats between LaVine and Simmons.

I put my laptop away from now, we were landing in detroit and i had to get into the stadium to get ready for the game.

ZACH LAVINE CARRIES BULLS PAST RIVAL DETROIT PISTONS BY 125-113 IN HEROIC EFFORT

Yeah that was the headline, so you might understand what happened, it was like he heard all the things we were saying about him, how hes selfish, how he doesnt play defense, and most of all how he was not a leader, not a superstar. But oh man did he prove us wrong. It was like he was possessed all night long, whenever we got in a slump and the plays werent working, he just took the ball and scored, every. single. time. And it didnt matter where from, Slow defender on him? Get to the rim, Covering the rim too much? Pull up for a midrange jumpshot. It was magical, it was like he scored without even trying, that night he had that true ''superstar'' moment. It was not about the amount of points he scored, or the 9 assists, it was how he made that game his.

His statline ended up looking like this:
                41pts, 2reb, 9ast, 3stl, 1blk, 0to, 16-24 FG, 1-4 3PT, 8-9 FT.

Now this changed everything for me, i am not giving this guy up. That evening i ended up calling the 76ers front office again to notify that we will not be giving up Zach or Lauri, to my surprise they were still willing to negotiate.

                *An hour later.*

''....And thats my final offer, we can change tiny details but its either this or no deal. Ill hear from you in the morning, bye.'' i said

                I hung up.

BULLS NEW ''BIG THREE'' SHOWS PROMISE AFTER LOSING TO LEBRON AND THE LAKERS 119-115

Ben Simmons had a phenomenal night in his first game with the Chicago Bulls, he showed immediate impact and leadership aswell as chemistry. Head Coach Jim Boylen seemed to not have taking very long fitting him in as the main ball handler and facilitator

They just have a bunch of left over salary cap, so in their terms they got a 2nd round pick for free.
