      2013 Recruiting

      Brad Thomas
      #2220 ( #157 G)
      OVR:78 (+8)
      *
      6'1 325lbs
      Boone, NC
      JUCO(Jr)
Thomas will instantly bolster the OL. Has a great first step and technique, but will need to work on his run blocking.

      Lance Sapp
      #323 ( #60 ATH)
      OVR:79 (+1)
      ***
      6'5 205lbs
      Kirckwood, MO
      JUCO(So)
Sapp brings in a big arm and great wheels to play QB. Also has great coverage skills to play safety. The teams big need is at DB, but Sapp could be a giant impact player at the QB position.

      Damon Harris
      #1314 ( #73 T)
      OVR:68 (+3)
      ***
      6'0 302lbs
      Dumont, VA
Could possibly see early playing time if needed. Hopefully Harris will redshirt and help build the OL for the future.

      Andre Douglas
      #2249 ( #137 T)
      OVR:64 (+9)
      *
      6'7 315lbs
      Trussville, AL
Douglass will provide depth for the future. Redshirt may get burned early in order to preserve other higher rated freshman.

      Morris Perry
      #1639 ( #128 OLB)
      OVR:78 (+2)
      **
      6'3 226lbs
      Waihee-Waiehu, HI
      JUCO(Jr)
The coaching staff still isn't sure why Perry is leaving Hawaii for Massachusetts, but he is more than welcome. UMass wasn't on Perry's initial list of schools he was interested in as he wanted to stay closer to home, but the promise of early playing time was the deciding factor. Perry will be an immediate impact someplace, but it isn't settled where he will end up. He may slide inside or even drop down to DE.

      Mike McAfee
      #346 ( #14 SS)
      OVR:74 (+2)
      ***
      6'2 190lbs
      Crestwood, MO
SS is actually one of the positions where the UMass coaching staff was pretty set for the next couple years, but it would have been hard to turn away a talent like McAfee. McAfee brings in great speed(92/88) and decent coverage skills. Could possible look to move to OLB or even redshirt.

      Anthony Thomas
      #2050 ( #94 TE)
      OVR:62 (+4)
      **
      6'4 230lbs
      Carnot-Moon, PA
TE is a giant position of need if the team wants to take the next step. Thomas isn't the playmaker the coaching staff was looking for, but he will be a great TE#2 and mainly be asked to block and play FB.

      Roger Holt
      #28 ( #2 HB)
      OVR:77 (+2)
      *****
      5'11 209lbs
      Hayesville, OR
When a 1 star school has a chance at a 5 star player, you take him no matter if you have a need their or not. The main draw for holt to UMass was how the team features the HB. Holt isn't going to win many foot races with his speed(88/87) but he will definatley run some guys over if possible. Holt will likely redshirt.

          Re: UMass- Daily Collegian

          2014 Season Preview

UMass has been accepted into the new looking AAC for 2014 which should help recruiting and TV exposure.

          Offence
The offence will look much of the same with a few changes. JUCO(SO) Lance Sapp joins the team at QB and will vastly improve the passing and running game. Sapp brings his 6'5 frame and 90 speed to go along with a decent arm(84/82).

The offensive line also gets some JUCO help at RG from Brad Thomas(78 OVR) to help bolster the middle. The OL made great strides during spring ball and looks to be an improved bunch from last year.

Bilal Ally returns from his 2013 All-American year and hopes to stay healthy this season and make a run at the Heisman trophy if he can stay healthy. Ally is the teams best bet as a homerun hitter with his 94 speed. 2013 recruit Roger Holt isn't happy about being redshirted since he knows he could contribute, but in the long run it is the best move for the team.

The Wide recievers have speed and good hands, but it just so happens that nobody has speed and good hands. 2014 recruiting will prioritize playmakers at the WR position.

          Defence:
There were lots of changes on defence in the offseason, few new names, but many new positions. UMass may be undersized at most positions, but they should be able to fly to the ball.

Chinedu Ogbonna moves from LOLB to LE to help with the pass rush. His technique isn't sound, but his speed makes up for it. Ogbonna and RE Jake Byczko will look to terrorize QB's and make life easier on the DB's.

JUCO Morris Perry(JR) was added to help bring more team speed to the LB crew. Perry and Senior MLB Cole McCubrey have NFL level speed at LB and are very good at going sideline to sideline.

Defensive Backs, like the WR position, has talent and speed but just not all in one. DB will be a major focus for 2014 recruiting in order to up the teams speed.

            2014 Recruiting

            Mark Williams
            #72 ( #21 ATH)
            ****
            OVR:76 (+3)
            5'11 207lbs
            Boynton Beach, FL
Williams has been a 2 way starter since his sophomore season, playing both HB and DB. His more natural fit is HB and could be a very explosive one at that with his speed(95/91). But the UMass team is pretty set at HB and could really use his speed on D. Regardless, Williams most likely be a 4 year starter. UMass beat out Ohio State and Houston for the likes of Williams.

            Casey Brown
            #1738 ( #121 T)

            OVR:65 (+4)
            6'7 290lbs
            Chesnut Hill, MA
Local kid with a great attitude. Will add great depth to the OL for the future. Also had offers from Purdue and Illinois.

            Eric Neal
            #891 ( #47 G)
            ***
            OVR:65 (-2)
            6'0 272lbs
            Summit, NJ
Neal doesn't have the size that most would want in a D1 OL, but he is great with his hands and has decent footwork. Will add much needed depth. UMass was Neal's only D1 offer.

            Teddy Young
            #619 ( #16 FS)
            ***
            OVR:71 (+2)
            5'11 171 lbs
            Water Valley, MS
Young could possibly start for 4 years at UMass. He brings in much needed speed in the secondary. He will be competing with a few redshirt freshman during spring ball.

            Chris McPherson
            #201 ( #8 CB)
            ****
            OVR:72
            5'11 173 lbs
            Woodbridge, NJ
The big push in recruiting this year is for increased speed in the secondary, McPherson does just that. Should be a day 1 contributor. Also had offers from Virginia Tech and Rutgers.

            Chris Alvarez
            #1201 ( #49 FS)
            ***
            OVR:68 (+4)
            6'0 190 lbs
            Everett, MA
Will add great depth to the DB's will added speed over what is currently on roster. Alvarez is a local kid and the UMass coaching staff is hoping to keep the few D1 prospects in state. His only offer came from UMass.

            Lionel Clemons

Clemons solidifies the OL depth for the 2014 recruiting class. Nothing flashy, but 3 hard working guys who will improve greatly in the offseasons. Also had an offer from Southern Miss.

                    Re: UMass- Daily Collegian

                    2016 Preview

UMass has plenty of bulletin board material as they were left out of the preseason Top 25 after an undefeated National Championship in 2015.

                    Offence
They key once again the the offense will be senior QB Lance Sapp who returns after a Heisman runner-up performance in 2015. Sapp was the leading passer by yards, TD's, and completion percentage last season. The coaching staff is looking for Sapp to take more shots down field this season as well as using him as more of a runner.
Roger Holt returns at HB after a stellar freshman season where he ran for over 1,400 yards and had 23 TD's. The powerfull runner has worked hard in the offseason to develop more break away speed without diminishing his powerful style.
The WR core will be young but fast. Samuel Emilus will be missed as he moved on to the NFL along with a couple other solid pass catchers. Look for Yates and Wiley to take the lead and freshman Matt Roberts to emerage as the new deep ball threat. Kevin Martin returns for his Junior year following his Mackey award winning 2015 season. Martin was a domonant redzone threat and will be used as a WR more this season as well.
The OL loses All-American Brad Thomas at LT but returns everybody else. The OL will be nothing fancy but there are also no holes.
                    Defence
The D-Line loses 2 All-Americans in Mike Ruane at DE and Dennis Osagiede at DT but will be replaced by solid guys who were waiting their turn.
At LB, Morris Perry took a rare Senior redshirt due to family issues and is back focused. Arik Smith is back after an injury sidelined him at the end of last season. Smith his highly motivated to improved his draft stock. Look for Tyris Lebeau to have a breakout season from the OLB position as coaches have made note of how fast he flies around the field.
The CB position will look much different this year as 3 year starter Josh Wallace was injured in spring practice and will redshirt. Sophomore Mark Williams will step into the top CB position after a breakout year playing nickel back in 2015. The rest of the CB group is senior heavy without much playing time in the past. But they all have speed.
At safety, both Teddy Young and Mike McAfee return after achieving All-American status as freshman. Those 2 will be looked at to hold the DB's in check.
Special teams will have 5th year Senior George Georgopoulos taking over both kicking and punting duties. UMass has recruiting both K and P hard to try and replace him, but he used that as motivation to work harder in the summer. Mark Williams will try and hold on to KR and PR duties but may need to take a few off now that he is playing full time on defence.

                      2016 Recruiting

                      Gregg Wiggins
                      #592 ( #42 OLB)
                      ***
                      OVR:80 (+1)
                      Opa-locka, FL
                      6'1 209lbs
Wiggins wanted to stay close to home but all of his offers dried up after he wasn't cleared academically. Wiggins took a year at a JUCO to get his grades in order but was no longer graded as a 5 star. Wiggins comes in with blazing speed (87/96) for a LB. He could even play safety if needed. It is always nice to redshirt everybody, but Wiggins may be too much of a playmaker to keep of the field.

                      Brian Mason
                      #1001 ( #52 G)
                      ***
                      OVR:67
                      Palm Harbor, FL
                      6'0 272lbs
Mason was one of the few Florida recruits who wanted to get away from home. And why not leave the sunshine state for the snow and cold of the Northeast. Mason will add more depth to the OL which is always needed. The signing of Mason also keeps the Florida pipline alive for the future.

                      Bryan Branch
                      #75 ( #19 ATH)
                      ****
                      OVR:80 (+6)
                      Forest, MS
                      6'2 188lbs
Branch brings an abundance of talent to UMass. He can play all back 7 positions on defence as well as being a dynamic WR. Branch has blazing speed (96/89) and great size. The decision will be made in spring ball whether to get on the field right away as a CB or redshirt and become a possible record setting WR.
UMass fended of a late offer from Nebraska, but in the end, Branch wanted to go to a place where he had a shot at competing for a title.

                      Mark Kemp
                      #190 ( #15 HB)
                      ****
                      OVR:75 (+4)
                      Bastrop, LA
                      5'10 195Lbs
Kemp is the more traditional HB for this system with his breakaway speed and still has the ability to break a tackle or two. Viriginia Tech jumped in with a late offer but the chance to play for titles at UMass was too much to pass up. Look for Kemp to redshirt and then primarly be a KR/PR his first year on the field while be subbed in during certain packages.

                      Lamar Glover
                      #4 ( #3 ATH)
                      *****
                      OVR:80 (+1)
                      Sioux Center, IA
                      6'3 228Lbs
Glover is likely the highest rated recruit to ever come to UMass. The coaching staff has done their homework on him and the off the field problems are worth the risks if he can even reach half of his potential. Glover has the perfect size and arm talent to be a game changing quarterback. He also played some safety in HS and loved to lay a hit. There is a small posibility the Glover may start day one. It all depends on how the other QB's progress during spring ball.

                      Justin Brown
                      #489 ( #27 T)
                      ***
                      OVR:76 (+5)
                      New Britain, CT
                      6'3 274Lbs
You know your program is on the rise when you can start landing highly rated OL. Brown will redshirt and likely be a 4 year starter whether it be at Tackle or moving to Guard. He will need to add some bulk to his frame.

                      Justin Alston
                      #769 ( #41 CB)
                      ***

                      5'10 163Lbs
Alston is a good depth signing at a thining out CB room. Has decent speed(91/85). Will need to add some weight to his frame to be able to compete with the big boys. Also had offers from Michigan, Texas, and Nebraska but choose UMass after his campus visit.

                      Johny Smith
                      #1084 ( #38 SS)

                      6'3 216lbs
Smith will be a likely canidate to move to LB when he comes to UMass.

                      Michael Berry
