NHL 20's controls are fantastic, and its various modes are abundant and robust.

Wonder how much EA paid GS to give them a favorable review and score? hmmmm....

Either that or the author of the review is incompetent and knows nothing about NHL hockey.

Gamespot is usually on the lower side of ratings, interesting.

My copy should arrive tonight, so I'm quite anxious to get in a few test games.

Why is this always everyone's go-to phrase?

Maybe the reviewer played it with fresh eyes rather than the jaded perspective we all play with, and they actually enjoyed it?

It's not shocking that people actually enjoy NHL 20 - it just seems shocking to those who have an implicit bias towards the franchise due to being let down so much.

Instead of trying to drum up a circle jerk about how EA pays reviewers, why not just accept a different perspective and try for yourself to play the game with fresh eyes?

There's no issue with enjoying the game. I'm sure a lot of people do. However, if someone believes it accurately depicts NHL hockey then it is fair to say they don't know anything about actual hockey.

              That's where I am.

I'm a huge hockey fan who hasn't actually played the NHL series in a couple of years. Really looking forward to playing this. I wonder if some fans should step away for a bit.

Didnt you leave the EA NHL forums for doing this same crap? Arguing with everyone and anyone who thinks this game should be better but has only seen it get worse over the years. People are allowed to hate this game just like they are allowed to love it. You seem to have a serious issue in letting other people have opinions that differ from yours.

Im sure plenty of people like this game, especially ones that are new to the series. Its a hell of a lot easier to appreciate the small/subtle additions to shooting and what have you, when you havent been watching the same lame shots go in for 6 straight years. Your expectation that people should just forget about the crap theyve dealt with for the last bunch of years every year is some seriously delusional stuff.

Im sure the dev team works hard, Im also sure some of the decisions about gameplay and what not arent fully theirs to make, but that doesnt mean I need to blow smoke up their *** every year when they put out the same product. (it does mean Im an idiot for buying it and thinking it will be different however).

If you enjoy this game the way it is, great, have fun. I on the other hand will continue to play and yell while some kid L2's his way up the ice and some ridiculous fashion until its tuned and then the game is back looking eerily similar to the way it has each of the last 5 years and my commitment to playing it dwindles more and more year by year and week by week. Holy run on sentence.

I think his point was that the original post is saying if you like this game you must either be getting paid off, know nothing about hockey or incompetent. This game could be better, but a person can enjoy this game and not be any of those. Some people prefer a casual, arcade experience. I played hockey competitively my whole life as well as watched it, I don't want to play a video game that mirrors it exactly because I don't usually have to time to play a game that lasts over a half hour.

I personally enjoy the experience of NHL 14 to anything this generation, I won't be buying this version, but I'm not going to tell people they are wrong about what they like.

I personally LOVE this version more than many others now. the game plays really good IMO.

the one thing i would change right now though is the ability to skip past the play of the period cut scene. but other than that, so far the game plays and feels really good IMO.

Not going to lie, I had a ton of fun with NHL 20 in the trial. The goalies, outside of a few non-reaction issues which NHL 19 also had, were so fun to watch. Deflecting pucks, eating shots, challenging shooters on 2 on 1's, it was certainly a breath of fresh air!

I thought the one-timer accuracy being so inconsistent and the acceleration levels to be the only two big gameplay issues outside of the AI. The AI still drives me nuts, but the new puck pickup animation alleviate some of those issues as you actually have more granular control when receiving a pass.

I'm still going to hold off purchasing because I want to finish my 19 season up, but this is a definite Christmas-season buy I believe, and I initially thought I was going to be able to skip 20 altogether.

I like the game very much and I've played them all. The NHL today with all of the chip & chase, systems tighter than your man-bun is boring. NHL 20 plays more like the halcyon days of the 80's and is fun as heck. NHL 94' and NHL 11' may have finally met their match.

I get where people are coming from when they say this about the game of hockey. I also get this about other sports, but I ask people to sit down and watch a full 60 minute hockey game. I want them to watch all of the stuff they complain about, the puck battles, the neutral zone play, etc. Then play a game of NHL. Notice how they have removed all of the boring stuff.

The holding, the trapping, etc. The game removed it to make it an interesting game. Name one game that doesn't skip the boring stuff and get to the fun stuff. I mean even in the Sims they skip through the sleeping part because it's boring and no one wants to sit through that. Why was everyone so in love with the World Cup of Hockey? Because it was end to end action!

I love hockey, but if I could watch a game in 30 minutes that had 6-8 goals per game, I would take it. I have other things to do with my time. I get the desire for realism, but sometimes it doesn't sell and really that is what companies do, they sell a product.

I am not trying to change anyone's mind about the game, I mean you like it or you don't, but for me I want as much action and excitement as I can get in the very short amount of time I have to play so this game and most sports games work for me.

I agree, the quest for realism is misplaced. I think getting the pickups, shot and new goalie animations is a big step forward. I would like more nerfed L2 for sure (I know they did nerf it some). Bottom line, it's different this year and in a good way. People should always remember too when it comes to how the AI plays that EA made a conscious decision in a tuner last fall to make your defensive AI teammates less aggressive to force you to change players and lock your position. They did this for a specific reason for online play. Many don't like it and this makes sense. But people shouldn't complain as if it's a matter of them ignoring this. They chose it.
