NHL 20: Pet Peeves (Part 1)

Now that NHL 20 has been out for a couple of months, I have noticed some...

As for fighting in the game I agree. Refs should be more than spectators. Also most fights don’t have a clear winner. I think the game should replicate that And award energy accordingly. As for shootouts I don’t like them in real life and don’t use them in the game. I have no problem with the old way of tabulating points... wins are wins losses are losses and ties are ties. I still get confused figuring out current NHL teams point totals and how they got there.

I always felt once the NHL implemented the shootout they should have changed the point values for wins and losses, much like many minor leagues do. 3 points for a regulation win, 2 for an OT/shootout win and 1 point for an OT/shootout loss. Or they could award 3 points for a game won in regulation or OT and 2 for a shootout win. Maybe give these teams a little incentive to try and win the game before needing the shootout. Although in a perfect world they would just eliminate the shootout entirely.

Few pet peeves I have. 1. when you pick your favorite team they should give you a Hockey Bag in WOC with random items of your favorite team to start out with. 2. On the intro screen before a game starts they get your total points mixed up with "goals".

Going back to my comment about points, it would be nice if we had the option to chose our own point breakdown. I think all we have that’s remotely close is choosing whether we want ties to just end in a tie or which OT format we want.

I agree with your first point. We also should have an option to purchase our favourite team's gear, instead of the arduous, ridiculous and often disappointing task of grinding out 3000 XP to be "rewarded" with clown gear, dance intros, face masks and other similar garbage. But simplicity and streamlining aren't an EA Sports mindset.

By the way, I'm P3 - 20. Meaning, aside from reaching that level, I've opened plenty of hockey bags from Threes, Ones, EASHL and Pro Am. With the implementation of the numerous items that were added to this game, for this iteration, it's even harder to get your team's gear.

Icing,,,after the puck is iced...notice how the energy levels of the time that iced the puck is higher, and the team that is on offense, has a much lower energy rating?

After you ice the puck you line changes, but the opposite team does not.

Also, if you ice the puck,, you cannot call a time out.

You can’t call a timeout after icing in the NHL.

Re: NHL 20: Pet Peeves (Part 1)

Regarding the linesman not breaking up fights, modders for NHL 2004 already figured out a great solution that EA could easily apply to current games.

In 2004, the fight engine had a hidden time limit, and the ref (no linesman in the game yet) would break it up once the time hit zero. In the vanilla game, you rarely hit zero without a knockout except when using goalies with terrible fighting ratings. BUT, with this discovery, modders edited the roster and lowered everyone’s fighting ratings significantly, thereby making most fights end in a breakup and knockouts rare, usually only achieved with a true heavyweight.

That’s all EA needs to do now. Have a time limit and make the health bars really hard to deplete. I’m guessing the reason they don’t is because they like the idea of fighting being worth something, in this case restoring all your lines’ every with a win, and timing out fights doesn’t have the satisfying “I win” ending.

I'm not clear if you are saying these are all problems with the game? The NHL rule is that the team that was called for icing cannot change their line up.

They need a patch to fix the stat displays for goalies.
