While 20 would be a likely choice,I don't want to go that route because Madden hasn't progressed in a satisfying manner over the decade so I'm inclined to pick one of the two that I spent the most time with.

I spent the majority of playing time with 12 and 16 because of my disdain with some of the versions that followed these two.That's a choice I would have to think about a bit.

Madden 20 by a long shot. 4 months after release and I'm still playing my franchise daily. In the past, I would've moved on by now.

Madden 16 still to this day was the best in terms of simulation gameplay, CPU AI, CPU QB AI. It has flaws, it lacks customization like Madden 20, but the gameplay folks.....it is the best gameplay overall in terms of balance, fatigue, penalties and QB AI and CPU AI on the field.

If Madden 20 had 16’s penalties, CPU QB AI, working fatigue system and 19’s off ball injuries we would have the best Madden ever.

But we still chase it......

I'm seeing a lot of praise for the gameplay of Madden 16 and I'm thinking of picking it up again.

Do the positives (penalties working QB AI) require OOTB, or did the patches actually improve the game?

Have to go with 12. No game since 12 has had a comparable franchise mode. Connected careers was a gigantic mistake from EA and they still haven't gotten the mode back to where it used to be nearly 10 years later.

16 had good gameplay, 19 was the first back on PC and we were able to mod it to play much better, but 12 actually had a franchise mode worth playing.

Madden 20 is technically the best game of the bunch in my opinion for sure, but Madden 15 is my choice. That game was groundbreaking. I'll never forget this Kaepernick screenshot. That game is the reason I upgraded from the Xbox 360 to the Xbox One and I played that game more than any Madden up to that point. They really stepped up their graphics and realism that year in a revolutionary way.
