"There's Loads of Madden 21 News Soon ... But Here's The Best Part"

"...When you buy Madden 21 on Xbox One, you get it free on Xbox Series X."

Is this an early sign Madden 21 will be a major disappointment? If you buy one and get one free, that would mean both copies are the same price, right? I thought I remembered in years past where there was a crossover between systems, EA would have two very different games and the previous generation game would be much cheaper since it wasn't really an improvement.

I have a bad feeling Madden 21 on Xbox Series X will be the same game as its Xbox One counterpart.

There's already a catch. You have to buy it by December 31st this year and redeem it before the end of March 2021.

Judging from that very short clip it does seems like Madden 21 on next gen will just be a current gen port. But that has nothing to do with cross gen, other games are doing cross gen too.

That doesn’t make it any better. I’m really disheartened that Microsoft is pushing cross gen so hard. We are making such a big jump in CPU and SSD drives and games won’t be putting them to good use.

Games will definitely be putting next gen to good use. Honestly, I could care less about graphics at this point, Madden 20 looked great.

The thing I'm looking forward to most for next-gen is improved load times and performance.

LOL It has nothing to do with how good the game will be. That's an emphasis of the Series X marketing that current gen games will get the free upgrade. That's why they mentioned it and made a huge deal about it.

And the reason he said that's the best part is because it was an Xbox Show that released that footage. It's not literally saying that's the best part of the game... it's just Xbox marketing.

Don’t get me wrong, those are definitely things I’m looking forward to also. But where things are really going to shine is in game design. Smarter CPU, many more things happening on screen in bigger environment, physics and destructive environments.

This gen is bigger leap than PS3/360 to PS4/XOne.

No amount of extra horsepower will convince EA to make a better product, if they can't find a way to use the horsepower to boost profits.

Very much looks like they simply focused on things that can be scaled up with more power rather than reboot

However to put things in perspective the madden code has been upgrading for a number of years to be modular so that new systems can be added on top instead of rebuilding from scratch and needing a decade to have the features you had before

Given that almost every single AAA next-gen game studio is pushing this sort cross-platform support at every chance they get to earn consumer goodwill for their titles as we approach the end of the current console life cycle (and also establish trust in the new consoles), I wouldn't read too much into Madden announcing this at all.

They're doing nothing different from almost everyone else on this front.

The first iteration of annually released next-gen versions is almost always the same. A little improvement in graphics and load times perhaps. It's only the following year that we start to see changes.

This is more of a blessing than a curse, IMO. Do we really want EA to reboot the series *again* rather than continuing to build upon what they already have? I'm sick of them rereleasing features that were apart of previous "reboots".

We're fortunate that the system architecture is remaining *fairly* consistent between current and next generation. This is more analogous to upgrading components within your PC, than switching from PC to Mac, which is something we haven't seen across console generations as of yet. They have less reason to completely rearchitect the game to support a new architecture, and instead can invest time improving what they have. Features can vary based on the hardware available.

Why would anyone be surprised that this would be a port? The devs have a few months with the final shipping hardware and limited sales of the next gen console (shortages). This is not a bad thing. You buy Madden 21 in August (which we all will) and IF you decide to go next gen, you get the upgrade for free.

This is called a win-win. EA is not asking you to pay a penny.

Well, at least it will be the same game but running at a higher resolution with faster load times and possibly even at 120 FPS on the Series X.

That's an improvement compared to the past like the 360 launch game where it was basically a downgrade in every way except for res, textures, model quality, and effects--basically stuff that matters for a screenshot. Otherwise: it ran at 30 FPS with stutters, didn't have a real commentary team, was bare bones when it came to modes and options and buggy as hell. The first couple on the PS3 also ran at 30 FPS. Then Madden 25 came out 2 months later on the next-gen consoles with little extra to show for it.

                              Hey, EA is progressing!

J/K I know they should be held to a higher standard but I did not expect this one to be a major improvement considering the time-frame. It's Madden 22 that I expect to be the real next-gen Madden that truly takes advantage of the extra horsepower because they will have had more time with the hardware and to develop the game.

I don't expect a Madden 08 PS3 scenario because these new consoles are said to be pretty similar in architecture to the current ones. Just more powerful. They won't have to learn how to program for them like the PS3.
