CLEVELAND, Ohio -- One of the city’s finest driving talents will be trying to make a name for himself on the world stage.

20-year-old Jack Collier, a native of Avon Lake, has signed a two-year deal with Pacific Car Competition in the United States Auto Club (USAC) Stock Car World Series, which begins its inaugural season next month in Melbourne, Australia. The series was created by the auto racing body six months ago, and will feature drivers such as Geoff Bodine and Will Carson. Collier’s teammate will be 34-year-old Brad Lockerman, a native of Liverpool, England.

“I’m excited to race some of the best drivers in the world in this new series,” said Collier in a press release. “I have wanted to try my hand at new disciplines for a while now, and hope that this can lead to even better opportunities in the future. Racing alongside guys such as Geoff Bodine, who has been a constant winner in NASCAR, will be a great challenge and one that I’m ready for.”

Collier will pilot Pacific Car Competition’s entry across the 10-race schedule, which features the aforementioned event in Australia as well as two races in Canada (Toronto, Vancouver) and seven in the United States (Binghamton, Bridgeport, Cincinnati, Glacier Fields, Grand Rapids, Kings Beach, Vallejo). It’s a series that doesn’t feature many tri-ovals, with eight of the 10 events being held on either road courses or street circuits.

Races will consist of 16 drivers, with the top 12 receiving respective point payouts of 20, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1. An additional point is given for winning the pole during qualifying earlier in the day, and a point is subtracted if the driver can not finish the race. ESPN has signed a contract to air all 10 events, beginning on Saturday, February 5 at the Calder Park Thunderdome.

Author’s Note: This is a new pet project I’ve always wanted to do, and finally decided to go ahead and try it. With my backwards compatible PS3 and array of old NASCAR games, I will tell the story of Jack Collier, a fictional stock car driver from Cleveland. My hope and plan is for this to begin with two seasons on Andretti Racing for PS1 to provide some backstory for Collier’s career before he enters the NASCAR ranks for the 1996 season. That year will be played on NASCAR Racing, followed by NASCAR 97, 98, 99, and so on until we get to NASCAR 09, where Collier will retire. Unlike the PC games, these games feature little flexibility in terms of field sizes and track schedules, but my plan is to complete a year in Season Mode in each game before moving to the next. That means the seasons prior to NASCAR Thunder 2002 will have fields between 16-24 cars and schedules without tracks such as Daytona. Some of these games (i.e. NASCAR 98) do have fantasy tracks, which I will incorporate into the season. I hope to achieve as realistic results as possible, and don’t want Collier to win 13 titles in 13 seasons, but some of the games are easier than others. For the games without a create-a-car mode (that doesn’t force me to drive a triple-digit car), I will pilot one of the backmarker cars so I’m not taking away from Jeff Gordon or Dale Earnhardt Sr.’s dominance.

While Collier will primarily focus on NASCAR following the two-year stint in Andretti Racing, I reserve the right for the driver to compete in other disciplines as well. I have a couple other racing games that would suffice, plus am always interested in acquiring other PS1/PS2/PS3 games that would both fit the mold and Collier’s “schedule”. I probably will not incorporate the Busch, Truck, and Modified Series once they become available in NASCAR 2005, but that could change.
