Re: The College Coaching Career of Bo Vandy

The Coastal Carolina Chaunticleers knew they needed to make some real headlines when they jumped from FCS to the FBS level and the Sun Belt.

So they hired former University of Nebraska offensive coordinator as their head coach. Now they're hoping the 45 year old coach can make some noise in a conference ripe for the picking.

"I think the Sun Belt is criminally underrated when it comes to how good some of these teams are. We obviously expect to be competitive, but it's not going to be a cake walk," Vandy said at his introductory press conference.

"At the same time, no one in the Sun Belt should take us lightly just because we're the newest additions. We expect to be very good out of the gate,' He added.

Out of the gate, Coastal Carolina will get to show off what it hopes is a high powered offense against UTEP.

Then they'll take on a national power, and a traditional power as an indepdent before they start the conference schedule.

Chanticleers Blow Out Miners In Season Opener

In Bo Vandy's wildest dreams, it's hard to imagine he thought his offense would play this well in his first game. Perhaps he didn't realize just how good some of his players were, until they took the field.

Grayson McCall, for one, looked like someone who could make opposing defenses in the Sun Belt shiver with fear as the season goes on.

The game wasn't always a cake walk. In fact, it started off as a bit of a shootout. It was 14-14 after one quarter, but then McCall went to work.

Coastal Carolina scored 20 unanswered points in the second quarter and that was all she wrote.

Part of what made the Chanticleers' attack so impressive is that while McCall had 393 yards and five touchdowns, Coastal Carolina had itself a rushing attack too.

The 1-2 punch of Bruce Hood and Walter Beaver combined for just over 200 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

After the game, Vandy made it clear that he didn't think everything was totally perfect. His defense did struggle, allowing 31 points and that included 13 in the fourth quarter.

UTEP's Rayman Wright was the biggest weapon for the Miners as he ran for 126 yards on just 14 carries.

In the end, Coastal Carolina's offense was simply too much to keep up with. That theory will certainly be tested in Vandy's next game as his squad takes on the 7th ranked Auburn Tigers.
