2021 World Juniors

Seeing how we won't have NHL again until at least January, next bit of hockey we have to look forward to is the 2021 World Juniors, which has the potential to be one of the best tournaments ever (nothing will top 2005 obviously).

Last time we had world juniors going when there was no NHL was 2012/13.

Finland had Korpisalo,Ristolainen,Teravainen,Barkov, but that team only won 2 games.

Sweden's forwards with names like Forsberg,Karlsson,Lindholm,Rask,Arvidsson,Rakell.

Russia with guys like Vasilevski and Kucherov.

USA had Gibson in net. Jones,Trouba,Murphy,Gostisbehere on D, Miller,Gaudreau,Galchenyuk,Trochek as the forwards and they won gold.

Canada had Binnington in net. Rielly and Hamilton on D. Nugent-Hopkins,Huberdeau,Strome,Scheifele,Danault,Drouin and MacKinnon as the forwards, but they finished 4th!

As for this years world juniors, obviously we'll see the big names from the 2020 draft, and top guys for 2021 together, but the 2019 class too I'm hoping we also have Hughes,Kakko,Dach.

First time since 2005 the tournament starts on Christmas. Entire thing happens in Edmonton this year. USA vs Russia is the headliner on Christmas. Canada as usual kicks off their tournament on Boxing Day. Russia-Sweden on December 30th, and what a fun New Years Eve with Canada-Finland and USA-Sweden.

Sweden has had a lot of covid problems. They lost their number one center and several of the staff including the main coach.

If the best rosters had been available and this had been a normal year this could have been an awesome tournament, now I just feel bad about sending young men across the globe with coaches they hardly know during a pandemic...

We know the drill.

Sweden goes undefeated in the regular play, but lose in the playoffs.

This is the way.

Hopefully some hockey back on TV gets me excited. Although it'll suck with world juniors not having a crowd. Canada always has lots of supporters, usually friends and family if it's not in Canada, and obviously when it's in Canada its huge. You get the minor league hockey atmosphere in a pro sized venue.

And Cuthbert not with TSN anymore either will be a loss especially for the world juniors. At least we have Gord Miller still.

And Russia is sitting 1st round NHL draft pick Amirov, the very likely reason being that he's gonna choose NA over staying in Russia. Won't be first or last time we see that.

Been boring so far today. Not bad play but meh. So glad the Rangers didn’t let Laf go, especially after seeing Dach go down like that.

Zegras taunting the Russian bench after his goal was pretty dumb considering the score.
