Da Czar Livestream on Next Gen Defense

Highlight: Da Czar is taking over defensive AI after the recent departures. He said he had about 6 weeks to work with system this year but is really excited about what he'll be able to do with it going forward (as soon as patch updates this year?)

Edit: Video is of current gen but he's talking about next gen.

Great stream. Very happy to hear Daczar is now in charge of the defense.

Daczar said they’ve significantly toned down CPU double teams. He said you’ll need to score 40+ points before the double teams activate. (Excluding the post. This is relevant for double teams on guards and forwards)

No problem. And yeah I remember him shouting you out on the last one. Was lowkey surprised not see you this time around.

A lot of good stuff in there.

That was music to my ears, as well. That plus the way he was breaking down the pick and roll AI is getting me really excited for what defense can be this generation.

Yeah this livestream provided great insight. Especially when it comes to PnR defense. The AI hedge adjustments sound promising, but im really excited about the ball screen defender interaction.

He mentioned that if defender goes over the screen high enough they will clear it easier, but if they hit the screener in the middle portion of their body then the brick wall animations are more likely to happen. Something like that is what i've been waiting on forever.
              Lineup:
              PG) Gary Payton
              SG) '95-'96 Michael Jordan
              SF) Sapphire Scottie Pippen
              PF) '95-'96 Dennis Rodman
              C) Hakeem Olajuwon

Indeed. As a gamer all I want to know is how the game is supposed to work. I know it won't be perfect and there will always be tradeoffs. I like how Czar plans to emphasize basic defensive concepts first. Everything branches out from there. I finally understand why the CPU center reacts the way he does on screens. I understand the mechanics of the game much better now thanks to shot feedback. I know what the game considers an open or contested shot. I also think it's good to have the synergy behind the offensive and defensive systems.

This is great. I never liked the defensive ai in 2k. Always cared more about defending 3s then the paint.

Agreed. I really like the way Czar said they made the CPU AI defense less smothering on the perimeter. I think that will do wonders for this game.

This (and a next gen PC release) is why I’m looking forward to 2K22 much more than 2K21 next gen. It’s easy to see we’re still playing with the leftover remains of the defensive systems OG put in place years ago. They were innovative back then, but Czar’s offensive work left the defense playing catch up over the last couple of years.

Re: Da Czar Livestream on Next Gen Defense

Just listened to this, good stuff here, good stuff. One thing that I really love is the implementation of more gradual and varied adjustments to situations.

So often it seems like games are coded(maybe the technical limitations of the game engines and consoles have played a part in it) to be too binary and/or extreme in making adjustments resulting in a solution more game breaking than the problem, i.e. the double teams that would come after 3 buckets to start the game.

On thing that I hope will be better with sports game this in this new gen is for AI controlled players to be even better aware of the responsibilities and capabilities of all the other players on the court/field with them so that they don't go rogue as much as they do now because they aren't programmed to be able to take a snapshot of what is going on everywhere around them.

Do this today: Instead of $%*#!@& on a game you're not going to play or movie you're not going to watch, say something good about a piece of media you're excited about.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

Re: Da Czar Livestream on Next Gen Defense

Czar mentioned that the base of defense has to be refined before the extra 'simmy' stuff is added. Maybe that means less options?

Philosophical change to make it less smothering.

Gap and moderate covers less smothering.

                          Non-shooting bigs covered less.

Ball movement will be less inhibited by over-pressure. Backdoors less powerful.

Currently working on hedge help. Improvements but not there yet.

                          Switching is much better.

More drive and kick/pick and pop/ball swing opportunities.

Hmmm. Every team will start off go under/soft hedge except against certain players (e.g. Curry) until we can beat them of that. (Really not sure I like this)

Double teams as last resort (excluding post scoring)

                          Improvements will be patched in.

Operating on principle that pressure does not equal good defense.

Screen effectiveness is determined by where you hit the screener (i.e. in the arms, or in the numbers)

Transition defense is still very complicated.

There are a few more defensive settings this year.

I mentioned this on his YT channel.

All that sounds amazing. The only thing has me a little concerned is when he stated that AI defenses would start off with the base defense of going under ball screens and soft hedging the big. The exceptions are when you play with an elite Curry type shooter, or when you hit some shots.

With most teams you play with, your primary ball handler will be a knock down shooter that teams would rarely go under on.
