2K Sports Presentation
Got NBA2K21 for 10 bucks this weekend. All I have to say it that SDS and EA Sports could learn a lot from them concerning how to do top notch presentation.Tags: None -

Re: 2K Sports Presentation
See, as a lapsed 2k fan who was very into the series from 2010 to 2016, and basically quit two years ago, I would argue that 2k's presentation has regressed horribly. I can't get back to gameplay as quick as I can after halftime in Madden, because 2k wants me to see a sponsor and EA doesn't. Same with timeouts, I have to see two Gatorade logos before I can get back to the game, not so anywhere else. And commentary, my god the commentary.
Two generations ago, 2k was king of the mountain for commentary. Unfortunately, 2k started to buy into their own hype and killed the golden goose with guest commentators. Now, on paper, having a special guest sounds great, but in practice, those guests only appear in very specific games, meaning 2k, by design, is presenting bad, repetitive commentary as a feature because it has a famous guy attached. Madden has the right idea, just find two guys who are fine to good and always available to record. The Show's commentary is an abomination either way, but 2k is a special case for me.Comment

In madden the only price of skipping halftime is the awkward commentary when you do. (Obviously still worth it.)

Re: 2K Sports Presentation
2k does decent presentation for Play Now style games; but it is VERY lackluster for franchise. I see very little attempt to tie-in events that are happening throughout your franchise. No score bug, no meaningful halftime show, lots of canned "interviews", etc. The lack of presentation is the number 1 reason why I stopped playing 2k franchise; it feels totally disconnected (like I got dropped from the franchise menu screens into a Play Now game).
I think MLB has a long way to go as well; but they at least attempt to tie-in some things that are happening around your franchise. The score bug that pops in stats/info about players throughout the game adds a lot (and it continues no matter how deep you are into your franchise). They discuss (in a basic way) what has happened in the series; what the potential storyline of the game is, and gear the commentary more towards a generalized approach that can adapt based on whatever players you have (vs just player-specific diatribes - though they make the mistake of having some of these in the game). Their use of a more generalized approach makes it adaptable to changing rosters (and custom rosters).
I don't "love" either...but for franchise games; I'll happily take MLB's over 2k's.Play the games you love, not the games you want to love.Comment

Re: 2K Sports Presentation
I only play MyCareer in 2K, and they talk quite a bit about the season, league leaders, standings, power rankings, upcoming schedule, etc. It's definitely deeper and more immersive than The Show in terms of making you feel like you're taking part in a living and breathing season.Last edited by jeffy777; 06-08-2021, 08:16 AM.Comment

That's interesting - maybe they made some improvements for next gen.I only play MyCareer in 2K, and they talk quite a bit about the season, league leaders, standings, power rankings, upcoming schedule, etc. It's definitely deeper and more immersive than The Show in terms of making you feel like you're taking part in a living and breathing season.
Of course, aside from "power rankings"...MLB has all of that information in their presentation too...it's done more via OSDs (which, to me, is preferable) than audio but it is definitely there.Play the games you love, not the games you want to love.Comment

Re: 2K Sports Presentation
I'm still playing 20 on PS4.
There are certainly some things that get a bit tiresome though. For instance, every single game they talk about how my previous performance is one they "won't forget for awhile". Also I hate how they name the Player of the Game before it's even over. They always go with a player from whatever team is ahead at that specific moment. I've lost track of how many times that team ends up losing 2 minutes later. Reminds me of Bob Costas in the Sandberg game

Re: 2K Sports Presentation
2k21 definitely brings up standings, recent trends, statistical leaders, etc. in franchise via both on screen graphics and through the commentary. They'll show where you are in the conference, show your standing in a playoff race if it's a close one. They'll show who is hot over the last 5-15 games.
It it weird it lacks scores from around the league, but 2k21 on both PC and next-gen do mention and show plenty of graphics that make your league feel like it is a breathing league.
The Show does a lot of things well. The series recaps are a very nice touch as well are all of the updates stat banners. I think at this point the weakest link for The Show is the commentary and ballpark sounds. MLB 2k nailed both of those things down and The Show could learn from it.
Even if you hated Gary Thorne and crew, the ballpark sounds actually made it feel like a real baseball game. The Show's ballpark sounds are often too short and not memorable. Where is the sound of broken glass, car alarms, etc. on foul balls? Why isn't the organ utilized more? Crowd chants should be louder and more pronounced and last much longer.
A huge part of going to a baseball game is all of the sounds that take place around the stadium. The Show simply doesn't capture tbis very well. If they could improve this area it would be a big boost to the atmosphere of the game.
If they could then get a system where the commentators mention other games happening at that time, it would be nice. I want a simple update. Say right after Acuna fouls a ball off for me they take the time between pitches to mention that the Phillies just hit a 2-run HR to take a 4-1 lead in the 5th against whoever they're playing. Mention where each team stands in the division and what ramifications it would have if they win and my score holds up, whatever it is.
Something generic would be fine.
"If the Phillies hold on and the Braves can't come back here, that would cut the Braves lead down to 4.5 games with about 6 weeks left in the season. We could be looking at race that goes all the way to the end of the year."
Those are the types of details that would take this game to the next level it needs to get to.

Re: 2K Sports Presentation
I’m honestly surprised after all these years they still haven’t added a Matt Vasgersion at the booth animation and presentation. Maybe when the game goes exclusively current gen it will happen.Comment
