Any other Rangers fans gonna lose their freaking minds if they hear Zah-BIN-ejad one more time? I mean, can we get a patch for this?? [emoji1787]

I'm just playing the latest NHL for the first time since before 2020 so I'm only hearing this awful pronunciation for the first time. This is like Gary Thorne with his Cah-nay-dee-ENS awfulness. (I'm from Toronto but hearing 'Canadiens' mispronounced is still awful to me, and no it's not because they're trying to pronounce it french as I've often heard, it's just wrong.)

Anyway.. Zibanejad.. nothing else Cybulski does bothers me. But I gotta say, that one burns my ears.

Any source for this? Or perhaps he just don't care how the Americans say his last name. He is part Iranese, Swedish and Finnish. His last name is Persian, but I don't think that is how the pronounciation works. Certainly not in Swedish or Finnish.

Often, like it was with Kaberle, the players will simply not fight the mispronunciation because their agent will tell them that it becomes more important for them to remember your name however they say it than to not talk about you at all because they can't pronounce your name. The 90s were a minefield of horrifically butchered Slavic and Eastern European names. In Football, British commentators still horribly mispronounce names from all over the world.
Anyway with Kaberle, it should have been Kahberlah and it quickly became Kahberlay from North Americans adding a latin linguistic suffix to a Czech name which is completely incorrect. My feeling knowing a tiny bit of how Persian works, is that Zah-BIN-ejad isn't right and my money is on the fact that if he says that's ok, it's to not fight people. If Sam Rosen says Zibanejad -- as written -- I trust he's done his homework and found out how to say it properly.

I just think it's ridiculous that Europeans are held to the standard of properly pronouncing North American names and dates often corrected when they say an American name with their accent but over here we just basically go with whatever we can handle and that is accepted as good enough.

Nothing is as bad as the arena announcer saying “Brady Sky” instead of Brady Skjei. After 5+ years in the league you would think they’d have this figured out by now.

They record it once and don't bother getting them to record it again the next year. There have been so many bad ones over the years. In the PS3 days, it was Gary Thorne saying Matt Stay-in for Stajan. Nobody EVER pronounced his name with a soft J. He just entirely pronounced it wrong and the sound team at EA just let it go.

I spent 3 months with Mika while he was in Binghamton, NY coming up with the B-Sens. The pool of talent during that stretch of time (summer/fall 2012) was staggering, but that's another story.

I was doing an internship with the organization (in the front office) and he was playing, obviously. A lot of people were sort of stuck on how to pronounce his last name in the beginning, and I heard him on many occasions, pronounce it "Zah-BIN-ejad."

How's that for a source.

Most underrated announcer in the league.

Sam Rosen is widely considered to be one of, if not THE best announcer in the league. He is about as far from being "underrated" as you can possibly get.

I had the honor of meeting Sam several years ago at a minor league hockey game. He was there as a guest of his son helping with the broadcast. I asked him to sign a Rangers puck I had brought with me and he was more than happy to do so. Talked Rangers with him for a few minutes before he had to get ready for the game.
