Question about the "double switch"

This might sound stupid but can a double switch involve 3 players? Here, I'll use an example.

Players involved:

Relief pitcher, left fielder and right fielder.

I'm a Pirates fan so I'll use them in the example. Okay so the relief pitcher is brought in along with the new position player. The new position player is Garrett Jones. Garret Jones is a first baseman/right fielder. The two starting corner outfielders are Alex Pressley in left field and Jose Tabata in right field. I want to swap Pressley out for Jones but don't want to put Jones in left field. I'd rather move Tabata from right field to left. Can this be accomplished during the double switch? That would involve 3 players. Allowed?

Yes, you can.

In video games though....you may have to first replace Pressley with Jones...then simply do a defensive switch.
But IRL....you can do exactly what you wanted to do.

Thanks Knight. Yeah I'm almost certain it can't be done in the show video game. I was just wondering. I thought I had seen it done during buccos games but I was starting to second guess myself. It's been a long winter.

Technically, a double-switch is exactly that... switching one player into the game for another, and then "switching positions." The only thing is that we don't see the latter move happen. In other words, a pitcher actually "comes in" as a position player (as they come in his spot), then he gets switched to pitcher (or the other way around, where the position player gets switched to pitcher, then gets subbed for the pitcher).

Obviously this doesn't actually happen in that they will get a statistical appearance in that position, but my point is that's why this very thing is allowed: it's simply a substitution and position switch at the same time. That said, you can make as many changes as you want "at the same time." So yes, that LR/RF switch that you asked about is always okay. They won't happen under the same switch-swoop per se, but they can all happen before the next pitch.

Technically no, as a double switch only involves the 2 players. You can also do a defensive switch though at the same time. Also defensive switches don't matter as you can play defenders where ever you want to.

I don't think anybody here was complicating things. It's like if he asked what the ninth term is in the Fibonacci sequence is. Instead of just telling him, it's much more clear if you just explain the derivation of that answer. If he wasn't lost on the actual meaning of "double switch," he would not have asked the question that he did.

The 9th integer in the Fibonacci sequence is 21.

However, some would argue that F<SUB>9</SUB>=34 because the first term is actually F<SUB>0</SUB>=0

I guess what I'm trying to say is yes, your move is allowed.
