Can someone explain how this works again? It's that time of the year where lots of players get DFA'd. I'm thinking that another team can claim a DFA'd player, but then must eat a portion or all of the contract? Are DFA guys considered part of the 40-man roster?

What discussion? You asked what DFA meant, and he linked you to a page that explained it...Pittsburgh Penguins
Penn State Nittany Lions
Pittsburgh Pirates

Anyone care to get into a discussion about this? Usually one who posts a thread will start off with some basic questions and then it grows into a discussion. That's how, in my understanding, a forum works.
