Smoak should be moved. Sanchez and Stroman probably shouldn't. Both their values are at a low, and it seems like such a Jays thing to trade guys when their value is low.

Speaking of reclamation projects, I wonder if they'd look at Shields. I'm sure many former Rays guys will be on Jays radar(or at least in rumors).

I know you guys gripe about Hal not spending enough but it's not like the Yanks aren't spending a ton of money. You have to also remember a lot of the young guys that have come up/will come up will soon be demanding huge salaries. It might be wiser to continue with that progression while adding pieces that will contribute but not be outrageously expensive.

Machado doesn't fit in with the guys they have there now. I think the only guy who's a clear piecea**** is Chapman. Far cry from before, I think.

Re: 2018-2019 MLB Hot Stove Thread

Here's an outline of what I need the Cubs to do this offseason...

1. Sign Bryce Harper (platoon Almora and Heyward in CF).
2. Get Yu Darvish healthy.
3. Do not re-sign Hamels (he was great, but he's not getting younger and the Cubs can't afford $20M/starter).
4. Sign a budget-level #5 starter (Lester/Quintana/Darvish/Hendricks/budget starter).
5. Keep Mike Montgomery in the bullpen.
6. Buy out Tyler Chatwood like he's Mo Green, or trade Chatwood to a needy team while paying down most of his contract. Sell Chatwood to the Nippon Ham Fighters for all I care.
7. Trade Kyle Schwarber to an AL club for one of: prospects/young starter/closer (keep Happ to play LF/UTIL)
8. Cut bait on Addy Russell, move Baez to SS full-time.
9. Make David Bote player/UTIL/assistant manager.
10. Add a top notch backup catcher (Mathis/Lucroy/Wieters) and play Willson Contreras a bit less.
11. Re-sign Stropy and Jesse Chavez, let Justin Wilson walk
12. Add a potential closer/late inning guy (Britton/Miller/Allen/Kimbrel/Kelly/Familia)

C'mon, Theo. It's not like I'm asking a lot here.

We're not the Athletics. This team prints money. Hal can afford to sign big free agents now, and then still sign our guys when the time comes (though I think that concern is overblown anyway for a few reasons I mentioned in our team thread). Anyway, with the way contracts run now, I wouldn't be surprised to see someone get the JD Martinez special frontloaded and get back on the market in a few seasons. If you had the opportunity to cash in on a young, controlled core that you can immediately add impact pieces to, to me, you do that, push the window and then see how the chips fall. What if you can get 3 years of Bryce for 120 mil, win 2 rings, he opts out and you go on with your day?

Disagree on 1 only because I don't think spending more money on offense is going to help much and I'm in the camp that Harper is pretty overrated offensively anyway.

The organization desperately needs to figure out how to develop pitching instead of over-spending on veterans. I'm sure they're going to give Chatwood another chance (who would trade for him??) since they're going to pay him regardless.

Everything else looks great
