Why do pitchers suck at batting?

Nothing brought on this question, but I've always wondered why pitchers suck at batting.

Re: Why do pitchers suck at batting?

    Several reasons.
First and foremost is they don't do it much.

A pitcher uses their arms quite severly when pitching. Because of this even on days when they don't pitch they still don't take batting practice like the rest of the team does. They need to rest their arms, and swinging a bat doesn't rest their arms.

Another reason is in todays game, pitchers don't work out like the rest of the players. Adding muscle to the upper body is usually considered a no-no for pitchers.

But mainly it just comes down to a lack of hitting practice.

yeah, it's lack of practice. Pitchers are usually the best hitters before they get into college or pro.

I want to see a pitcher who can hit .300.........that would add so much to a team.

hmmm tough question...not, first of all its hard enough to hit if thats all you do. Alot of these guys are strict pitchers. Many of them would only be able to hit at single A or High school pitching at a high clip. Even if they practiced like hell at it they would still be lucky to hit .200 much less .300, the pitchers that can hit usually are the ones that are converted to pitching.

Almost no one coult hit well if you are only hitting every 4th or 5th game and getting only 2 or 3 AB's, regardless of practice or ability.

              ^ True. . .

LIke Previously Stated. . .Its Mostly Due To Lack Of Practice. . .Because Their Teams Expect Them To Do Their Job And PITCH, They Rely On Their Other Teammates to pick up the slack hitting for them. . .

If All Else Fails, Go Pitch In The AL. . .So You Dont Have To Be Embarrassed. . . lol

(By The Way, I Cant Stand The DH Rule. . . )

Hampton on the Braves ain't bad.

but mostly due to body build.

rick ankiel.. is actually a very very very good hitter.. he is such a good hiter they almost considered moving him to the outfield because his fastballs accuracy has been hay wire these last few years. and well he would have a gun out their.

A pitcher hitting .300 wouldn't significantly help a team out. It would be nice but since he would only play 1 every 5 games it wouldn't be that significant. Even when he does play he has a 30% chance of getting a hit and he will most likely get 3 at bats at most because by the 6th or 7th inning he will be out of the game.
