This is a serious question. Maybe he won't have the numbers to be in the hall but he does have the legacy and he has done more for the game then most in basketball
Heaven forbid I judge someone's basketball worth based on their ability to actually play basketball.
The only reason Yao is different from 50 other good but not great players in the NBA is because he's Chinese. They've never had any successful players, but they do have 85 gazillion people. If he wasn't Chinese, this topic wouldn't exist.
I can't say that Yao deserves to be in the Basketball HOF. He's only halfway through his NBA career which has been solid but not great. What was his numbers/significance like in China before he went to the US?
I ask because Drazen Petrovic is in the Basketball HOF. He had a pretty good NBA career going for him when it was cut short due to a deadly car crash HOWEVER, he had an amazing career and Europe and basically paved the way for European to get into the NBA with more ease and regularity.
That's the only way Yao would make it in, if there's more Chinese players in the NBA who end up having solid to great careers of their own.

I had to spit my water on my computer screen when I read this LOL
I don't see how helping globalize the sport to the lengths that Yao has isn't worthy of putting him in the HOF.
He is an ambassador for the sport. A global icon.
His skills aren't even what matter here, If we were basing it off of SKILL and PRODUCTION, then HELL NO. He isn't HOF worthy.
But this is beyond basketball
I feel what you are saying... especially with the "beyond basketball" thing............
The issue is, whether 80% or whatever % of the HOF voters will see it your way. I'm not sure that happens........
If he keeps on the path that he is on (the scenario SPTO points out about paving way for other Chinese to have solid or regular NBA careers wouldn't hurt but I don't think it would be 100% necessary) then he, theoretically speaking, should have a healthy shot at getting in.
