That is right on the money. Keep in mind though that the point guard is usually the hardest player to defend on the basketball court. They usually are the quickest and have the best handle in the world. Also, the defending point usually has his back to his defensive mates and is on an island by the 3 point line.
A big no-no for a defending point is to swipe or rip his oppisite number's dribble. It is a very low percentage move since their handles are so good.
What you want to do is turn the opposing point guard. Basically, make the man turn his back to his offense and the basket. Dennis Johnson was the master at this.

Personally, I think Deron Williams will hold that distinction for the next 5 or 6 years, but I think in the years after that, we will be seeing just how great a point guard and player Stephen Curry is going to be. He reminds me of Rajon Rondo with a far superior shot (really the only comparison I could draw, aside from the Nash comparison everyone makes) and I wouldn't sleep on Ty Lawson, because this past year when Billups was out, Lawson started 5 or 6 games and averaged around 23 points and 7 assists per game. So, I think if he stays in that Denver system, he could really flourish. EDIT: The guy that just responded made me remember another one - Aaron Brooks EDIT 2: Throw Jrue Holiday and Devin Harris on here, too. I knew I was leaving people off. Sorry.

Well, we're almost 2 years into this question. Curious to see who's opinions have changed or which guards have popped up and jumped into the race

and since the title asks about 5 to 10 years into the future, I'll make a top 5 list for that span, as well

Guess we can remove Sherron Collins, Chris Duhon, Goran Dragic, Malcolm Delaney, & Scottie Reynolds from the list, and add Jeremy Lin, Jeff Teague, Jimmer Fredette, Kyrie Irving, Mario Chalmers, & Norris Cole to the list. Not to mention guys like Austin Rivers & Kendall Marshall coming out of college.
