Is Gregg Popovich the most underrated coach in all sports?

The guy has 3 rings and a 67.5% winning percentage in his career. SA for the past 4 years is considered to be very old, but yet he has them right there.

He finds value from players no one has heard of.

Why do people not put Popovich in that top tier of coaches in the NBA of all time?

Even though Pop annoys the **** out of me....I wouldnt take another coach before him.....The guy just knows how to win and how to get the most out of his team....even by unconventional means....

He also gives the best EOQ interviews

Because the media likes to pretend that guys like Vinnie Del Negro are good coaches.

Its really because San Antonio is so completely not media friendly. Small market, "boring" team led by a "boring" coach. The only time you hear about him is from smart commentators like Hubie Brown or when he cracks jokes in his press conferences.

Vince Lombardi is regarded as one of the greats, and he coached at GB. What's the difference?

He coached in a time where the small markets didn't make a big difference and he coached a completely different sport. He was also an extremely innovative an influential coach. Pop is a great coach, but he hasn't exactly changed the game.

I don't think he is underrated. When there is talk of the best coaches in the NBA now him and Doc are the first names mentioned. I always hear him regarded as one of the best.

As far as all time goes I don't seem him as overrated but more like overshadowed. His run went up against Phil Jackson and he has won 11 titles. Plus Phil knows how to work the media a lot better than Pop. Phil got more of the pub but winning 11 rings will do that for you. When it's all said and done Pop is a hall of famer and will be regarded as one of the all time best.

Pop doesn't take much of the credit, if any, for the team's continued success. Gregg heaps all of the praise onto having coached Timmy, Manu, Tony and David Robinson. His motion offense and defensive strategies have evolved and improved the longer he has gone on coaching. Pop does deserve a ton of credit for sustaining the team's success through such a long time and such wildly different personnal. He has droven me crazy with certain line-ups, personnal decisions and strategies, but he is undoubtably the best coach in the NBA.
