They are excellent examples. Do you think just anybody could coach MJ, Kobe, and Shaq at a high level?

Why do you think SA has made the playoffs 20+ years in a row, even after losing Duncan? Cause Pops is an excellent leader and an excellent coach who knows how to get the most out of every player on his rosters.

But more importantly, they set a culture in place that keeps everyone in line and on the correct path.

The 1990s Chicago Bulls are widely recognized as one of the best basketball teams in NBA history.

Of course, they were led by one of the greatest players of all time, Michael Jordan. But any fan of basketball knows it's a team sport, and superstars not only need an effective supporting cast, they need a good coach who can keep the entire team focused and on the right path. And for the Bulls, that would be Phil Jackson.

I'm not arguing against any of that, I'm talking about managing egos and sacrificing.

There wasn't much sacrificing on those Bulls teams, 3rd best players on the team making a million dollars instead of 20-30 and playing for media attention and/or max deals. Jordan didn't have to sacrifice, and he was the only massive ego on the team who kept everyone in check and they were recognized as a tier below him. As long as they were winning nobody was going to question so much of their game-plan catering to him, so much so that he's the all time leader in usage. Nobody on those teams was going to have huge question marks around their roles, or question Jordan's leadership and/or willingness to win. It was understood he was the alpha, it was understood he wanted to win as badly or more than anyone else. There wasn't any questions around his leadership.

Outside of that, Pippen made trade requests, sulked on the bench and threw a fit when plays weren't called for him, sat out with headaches, etc. Not putting any blame on Phil, but all of that would be a MUCH bigger deal in today's media exposure. And to say that without Jordan Phil did some crazy amazing job at balancing egos, at least compared to today's environment, would be a stretch. His best player wanted out when there was no Jordan.

Shaq and Kobe also were struggling to get along with Phil. Eventually to the point that they broke up. Kobe tried to demand trades out of LAL while they had Phil. So while they all respected him and believed in his coaching schemes, it's not like egos weren't in play.

Pop is a bit different, he maximizes everyone on the team and their talent, but that's not the same as balancing egos and managing up and coming young stars along with stars (especially one who already left a winning culture to be "the guy").. Most of Pop's stars were what most would consider pretty low egotistically. Nobody talks about Duncan/Manu/Parker in terms of them having egos.. Part of that because Pop sure, but he lucked into those guys all having that same attitude and mindset as well.

Some of the few guys that did have somewhat of an ego wanted out. Stephen Jackson, Kawhi Leonard.. Having very good and successful teams built around guys like Diaw, Bellineli, Mills, Green, Horry, Kerr, Johnson, etc.. He maximized the output of those groups with players who were very good at fitting what he needed, but those aren't the same as managing high-ego players seeking out max contracts..

Not dissing either coaches abilities at all, but what you're trying to compare it against is an apples to oranges argument.

None of that stopped Shaq from swinging on Kobe or MJ decking Steve Kerr.

Again, to your point, there may be only a few coaches who do it but they are in the minority.

The guys in the locker room tend to govern themselves.

King, is that tank train still in the Windy City? Bucks are 13-0 after losing a game and they just didn't lose, they were beaten like a drum.

Or we start to fade near the AS break.

No Niko tonight.

Mario Hezonja just cocked that joint back and banged on them, word to James Johnson.

I don't know what's happened to Rondae but it feels like he's regressed this season. Definitely want to see him back next season but even that's up in the air since we can gain extra cap space from renouncing his cap hold in the offseason.

As much as I want to hold a grudge against Paul George for stiffing the Lakers, I just can't do it. He just comes out with very little fanfare and balls every night.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.
