509 passing yds for Cousins. That was a wild game.

          Re: Week 5 Discussion Thread

I only now just watched the game archive this morning, and when this moment happened my mind kept going back to it:

Why did Lavonte David pick off that pass on 4th & 15?

Instead of being within the 20-yard line, they were at the 28-yard line. If all went the same, instead of punting at the 42-yard line, they could've kicked a 51-yard field goal.

Now, would've they risked that? Not sure, but I don't think a punt would've been very effective there (nor was it where they were, as I suspected a touchback was possible regardless), save a few delay-of-game penalties to back them up.

I don't know if this moment is discussed in circles, since instead they'll be praising the likes of Cousins, downing the ball on time, Koo, etc., but in hindsight I'm looking at this play over and again and thinking about the ramifications of intercepting the ball versus batting it down. No one else may think about it, but I lay the loss of the game on David right now because of it.

This may end up being like the DJ Moore helmet off penalty that cost the Panthers a playoff opportunity a couple of years back. At the end of this season, I could look back at this one moment and say that if the Bucs are one win shy of going into the playoffs, it's because they intercepted the ball.

Am I wrong in this mindset?

I wouldn’t take it as far as you are. He could have dropped it, yes. But let’s not get too dramatic to the point where if they miss the playoffs by ONE game that is the reason.

He took it back to the 27. That is well within field goal range. He has no idea what the subsequent plays are going to result in.

It’s a dangerous and silly assumption to make that the same exact results would have played out the way they did if he just batted it down. In my alternate reality when he batted it down they fumbled on the first play and gave it back to the Falcons.

We can chalk up any loss for anything down the line. It's just something I'd like to hang my hat on should that be the case in an "if only" kind of scenario.

And we can say what we want there, but when it comes to scoring opportunity, being closer to the endzone is better than being farther.

The one argument that works against me is if he gets closer to the endzone with that interception (or scores), then they are better for it. I just felt like they were in great FG position being at the 20-yard line, and would absolutely settle for that as needed.

This isn't something I'm going to die on a hill with, though. I just thought in the moment that it was a poor decision.

I'm with you Blzr. And I take it out further, even when we throw an int on third down and its far enough downfield, I don't sweat it too much, I just view it as a bad punt. But don't go by me, this is why the Jets won't let me run the team lol.

Baltimore has got to fix whatever is wrong with getting plays in or getting to the line. I don't know if they break the huddle too late or Lamar doesn't have good timing on adjustments, but I don't recall seeing a team struggle to avoid delay of game penalties as much as this team, and this time it likely cost us the game

I'm watching RedZone, and I don't think Scott Hanson knew that the Texans had all three timeouts left when he kept saying the Bills should've just let it go into overtime.

Granted, they probably should've ran the ball three times before punting to expire the Texans' timeouts, so they couldn't manage the clock before kicking the game-winning FG. It sounds like he thought they should've kneeled three times or something, though.

Hope Cincy fans don't blame their placeholder for the loss. I'd blame the coaches for going into ultra conservative field goal mode when they were looking at a 50+ yard FG
