I would actually go where there are none. Lets go with your analogy:

Lets say you own the biggest steakhouse in DC. Everyone likes your steakhouse . People in DC know that you have the best chefs and wait staff. They know you get the best cuts of beef. Why would I want to open up a rival steakhouse in DC with worse chefs, staff and food? All consumers will do is compare us to your steakhouse and complain about it not being as good.

Add on top of that, there are 3-4 other restaurants (NBA, NHL and MLB) that offer great food when your steakhouse isnt open.

I'd rather go to cities that dont have access to your steakhouse and its quality. Seems like a better business plan to me.

The only thing though, and I love your analogy because I love DC and I love steak, is that the #1 steakhouse would be closed during โ€œnon-peak monthsโ€ aka post-NFL Super Bowl until the start of the new season so starving football folks might try your Murryโ€™s quality steaks if theyโ€™re hungry enough.

Aside from KG mentioning that his steakhouse would be closed, we know there is a market for steakhouses there. You would be providing a cheaper alternative. Yes, his steakhouse is better, but you gotta pay $100 for a steak. You are offering steak for $40.

I think the smart move is play in big cities, but have smaller town expectations. Want a team in NY for the media market? Cool, but keep operating costs at the same level as if you were playing in Birmingham. Don't say "well we're in NY so we should expect 50,000+ in attendance."

Edit: Just read that the DC team will be playing at Audi Field, home of MLS DC United with a capacity of 20,000. That is perfect.
The NY team is set to play at MetLife stadium. Not at all smart lol. Operating costs for that will be ridiculous

So that seemed like a decent premier for the AAF. My concern now w/ the XFL is they try and get more spendy w/ coach and player salaries to compete, the AAF folds due to lack of talent and the XFL follows suit because in an effort to directly compete they go down a path that's not sustainable.

I think that's unlikely, but we'll see how things shake out.

One of those leagues should allow players outta high school or one year removed.

Thats what Yee is starting. Alternative to college football where you can play until eligible for the draft. The dates of the article are older but he was just on the radio here talking about the league so he's still trying to get it started.

I don't think there are rules against it as it's a NFL rule. If they want to stick around, they need to do it.

I heard someone talking about it on the radio but there wasn't any real details. The AAF may not do it with their relationship with the NFL, but the XFL should pay some.

According to Darren Rovell the XFL has the money and plans to woo 2019 NFL rookies to sign with them. In fact, XFL officials have been spotted at the Combine.

EDIT: I jumped the gun as this is for undrafted rookies.

They need to go after college players. If they can get some 3rd year players that want to improve their draft position, they may make themselves watchable. Nothing would be better than seeing players play against former NFL players.

AAF is following the NFL draft rule, the XFL is not. I wouldn't necessarily want to see freshmen but some others in college could play in this league.

To expand on that. Start with the bad news they aren't getting a right fees, which is to be expected given what happened with the AAF. Now the good news they aren't paying for TV time like AAF did and FOX/ABC are covering production costs (said to be around $400K per game).

That's a real good (borderline great) deal, IMO, given that the AAF lasted 3 months and the original XFL lasted a year and lost NBC/Vince $50M.

I wonder if the FOX/FS1 deal was helped because of WWE moving to FOX. FS1 also getting a WWE show too. So relationship is preexisting between Vince and FOX exec's.
