There was no good reason for them to ever drop that rule.

That 3rd QB rule must have been for money reasons. Super stupid
rule. Especially under the new concussion rules.

What would money have to do with it? They get a game check whether they are active or not active. And even then, with the rule they were still considered inactive unless they were needed.

It was changed because teams would rather have 46 active players on game day instead of 45 players and an emergency QB. If you want three QBs available then dress three QBs

Re: 2023 Offseason Thread

I mean the only reason would be to help Purdy avoid further injury, anyone expecting a coherent offense out of the 49ers 5th string QB, a guy who would have had single digit practice snaps to that point, is delusional.

Re: 2023 Offseason Thread

It's sad that it takes things like that happening in big moments for the league to react but I have no doubt that they'll change it and just say you can dress 46 if the 46th is the emergency QB. If it's not a QB, then you dress 45 still.

They (Actually I don't think anyone wants) to see that happen in championship games.

Re: 2023 Offseason Thread

I think if they do anything they’ll keep game day rosters at 46 plus allow a 47th person to be designated the emergency QB. Going back to the old rule would be a step backwards

The rule was dropped after the 2010 season.
Forget that, just go full NHL mode.

Emergency Backup QB.

Just some random guy your team designates as the emergency backup QB who used to be a QB back in college.
