Although they won't do it, there is a certain appeal in basically saying, or maybe even somebody involved literally saying as an unnamed source, "Sure, we could have been undefeated, but that's a pointless goal. What does that really accomplish? Allow us to drink champagne every year, looking like pathetic old men?"

It sticks it to the current opponents (the Pats, themselves, dictate whether they win or lose) AND the 72 Dolphins (could they really continue to celebrate when they were handed such an obvious gift?), and it does protect the most important players for that last game before entering the playoffs.

These men are athletes and competitors. There is no way, for any reason, they are throwing a game. They want to win, and as we've seen they want to win big. They will do their best to win every game, that's pretty much obvious. I for one hope they do and they do it again next year. Woot woot!

I think it's pretty obvious that he means the first regular season 16-0 team.
