Well the Colts played in Baltimore so it would make sense because Baltimore is on the coast. I know what your getting at though, as the directional names don't really mean much because the NFL wanted to keep it's rivalries intact.

The sole reason was/is because of the longstanding rivalries between Miami, Buffalo, NE and NYJ. It's the same reason Dallas was kept in a division with Washington, New York and Philly, which makes even less sense geographically.
