well more times than not, its a local thing, or handed down from generations from parents to kids. anything else is mostly bandwagon jumping. Living in Chicago, I've noticed that most local fans here just hate NY teams in baseball, and the Packers and Cowboys in football as those are the teams that had the most success historically, whereas the Cubs, ChiSox and Bears, haven't historically.

if a fan was to jump on the bandwagon of the team that they hate or are jealous of, that is admitting their favored team's inferiority. Most sportsfans have too much pride to do that.
