Re: 49eres Hire Mike Martz As Offensive Coordinator

Well I posted this in the Niners thread before seeing this thread so I will simply copy and paste it here, needless to say Im not all that thrilled by this news.

Well the Niners hired Mike Martz today and I couldnt be more dissapointed then I am right now. Martz is a terrible fit for this team, we have a QB that is unable to drop back as many times as Martz would like, we hired an offensive coordinator that would rather throw on 1st, 2nd and 3rd down even though we are a team that should be run heavy, hopefully Im wrong but I think Cam Cameron or even Chan Gailey would have been a better fit then Martz. The only plus side is if Martz can bring in some big name free agents on the offensive side of the ball but unfortunatly this year there isnt much out there to even bring in.

To elaborate on my points, we lack a true # 1 receiver, we have a RB that needs the ball 25-30 times per game total, 20-25 times rushing and then 5 times or so in the passing game, and I dont see Martz doing this unless he constantly runs screens for him. I keep reading people comparing Martz in St Louis and what he did with Faulk but I also see that people fail to point out that Faulk did a ton of damage in the passing game based on the insane mismatches he provided, Faulk was Reggie Bush before there was a Reggie Bush, and unfortunatly I dont see Gore giving the defense the same type of headaches that Faulk gave them. Martz really needs to change his playcalling this year, we cant have Smith getting destroyed in the pocket like Kitna did, when Smith is running for his life it can only lead to negative plays and if Shaun Hill wins the starting job in preseason then we are in an even worse position. Smith will give us the best chance to win running Martz system, but thats more by default and not an indication that I feel he will actually succeed in that system.

I think it is a good hire but it will take a few seasons.

True but I would hate to think that things have gotten so bad in SF that we are willing to accept anything because its better then the garbage we had previously. Hostler had to go, Nolan should have acted sooner during last season and for that I have my doubts in Nolan and his ability to lead a team and make decisions on the fly, his feud with Alex Smith only further cements that idea.

If Martz can come in and run Gore 20-25 times a game then I will be happy, if the Niners fall behind 14-3 at halftime and he decides that the second half is going to be nothing but the pass to get back into the game then this season is going to be a disaster, it all depends on whether or not Martz will learn from his past mistakes or not.

How many chances does this get to keep proving his success in St. Louis was a fluke?

Same amount of chances Brian Billick keeps getting to prove that he is nowhere near an offensive genius I guess.

I don't like it at first blush, but at least its a name. Maybe it will attract some FA WR's that wouldn't have looked at SF before. I'm going to restrain myself and say "lets wait and see", but honestly, I'm disappointed.
