Is it a bad thing to get a 1st round bye?

It seems like teams usually come out flat most of the time after a bye during wildcard weekend. While teams that do play seem to click at the right time...

Didn't the Colts have a bye last year and win the Superbowl? For three years the Eagles had Byes and won the divisional but lost the NFC championship. I don't think it matters.

It's just that the Cowboys suck, and the Chargers have some kryptonite for the Colts.

I think it hurts the team if they rest their players the final week or 2 of the regular season. The Colts starters hadn't played a game in 3 weeks while the Chargers have been playing every week. I think it showed.

Yeah and thanks to a fg shank by Tynes early, and them shutting down LJ they beat the ever living crap out of us.

Re: Is it a bad thing to get a 1st round bye?

It's hard to say with any certainty. It definitely hurts some teams; Jerome Bettis said he thought one of the reasons the Steelers were able to beat the Colts a few years ago in Indy was because of the weeks they had off. The #2 seed got knocked off that year also (Ravens). There is something to making sure your team maintains it's "edge"; I think the Pats benefited because everyone was trying to knock them off late in the season. The Giants/Pats game was pretty much meaningless to the Giants but they played like it was the playoffs. And even though they got a few people hurt because of it, maybe it's benefited them for this playoff run.

I'm not saying it's a bad, bad thing but I think it hurts continuity, which is a big thing in the NFL imo....
