Question Greatest Team Ever

I know this is a subjective question and it's going to get a bunch of different responses but Mike and Mike were talking about it this morning and some of the arguments being made by Greenberg made me laugh.

Let's say, for arguments sake, the Patriots beat the Giants in the Superbowl and go 19-0. Who do you think is the greatest team ever. Take into account the salary cap, free agency, the conditioning of today's athlete, and any other factor.

Here are some off the top of my head:
  • '07 New England Patriots
  • '85 Chicago Bears
  • '84 S.F. 49ers
  • '94 S.F. 49ers
  • '72 Miami Dolphins
  • '90's Dallas Cowboys
  • '70's Pittsburgh Steelers
  • Pre-merger NFL teams

(And yes, I tried searching but kept coming up with errors)

Thoughts?

Re: Greatest Team Ever

imo,
1. '85 Bears
2. '78 Steelers
3. '93 Cowboys
4. '94 49ers
5. '89 49ers

all of those teams had to go through some other all-time great teams to win it.

Tough question, but if I had to say one, I go with the Bears.

The Bears simply dominated their dominated their opponents. In the playoffs, they beat the teams 21-0, 24-0, and 46-10. Arguably the greatest D ever assembled on one side of the ball and the arguably the greatest RB of all-time shouldering the load on the other side of the ball.

'78 & '79 Steelers for me. Bradshaw, Harris, Swann, Stallworth, Webster, Greene, Greenwood, Lambert, Ham, Blount, Shell.

That's the one thing I can't get past. I don't think an undefeated regular season to automatically qualifies you as the best team ever.

The way that '85 Bears team dominated other playoff teams was simply amazing. Although the '84 49ers team that lost only one regular season game by three points to the division winning Steelers was impressive in the playoffs as well.

N.Y. Giants: 23-10
Chicago Bears: 23-0
Miami Dolphins: 38-16

They had the #1 overall defense and the #2 overall offense.

One thing I'm sure of is that you can't include any team in the conversation that didn't win the Superbowl.

I don't see why not. If you're going to discount the Patriots going undefeated, why not discount the team winning a Super Bowl?
