Maybe he is well respected amongst is NFLPA brethren. Why does it matter what position they play when it comes to union matters?

I always thought Troy Vincent would eventually be Upshaw's successor once he left.

Exactly what I was going to say.

Playing ability=/=negotiating ability and other union skills

I don't think it should matter. But often it does. That's why I'm surprised.

NFLPA needs a professional labor leader. There is too much money on the line just to have former players as leaders.

I agree with this. I think the NFLPA should follow what the NHLPA has done in getting a leader that knows his way around the legal side of things. The current NHLPA boss was a former prosecutor and is well respected as a "clean" person in terms of how he handles power.

As for Matt Stover having that much pull, well it shouldn't matter what position or status the person has. I mean look at baseball and Curt Flood. He was a pretty good player but not a huge star yet his case opened the floodgates (pun not intended) for modern free agency.
