CRENNEL NEEDS A FESTIVUS MIRACLE
Posted by Mike Florio on November 30, 2008, 3:14 p.m.
It’s commonly believed that Browns coach Romeo Crennel is in danger of getting fired. According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, Crennel needs a “ miracle finish” to avoid termination.
But even if the 4-7 Browns run the table, a 9-7 record likely won’t be enough to qualify for the postseason. Last year, the Browns surprisingly won ten of 16 games, but failed to secure a wild-card berth.
It’s unknown whether G.M. Phil Savage is in similar danger. Several days ago, Savage indirectly blamed Crennel for the team’s struggles this season, explaining that Savage’s responsibility is the 53-man roster, and that the coaching staff thereafter is responsible for their performance.
Mort also presents a possible list of replacements for Crennel, naming former Steelers coach Bill Cowher, former Browns, Chiefs, Redskins, and Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer, Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, Giants defensive coorindator Steve Spagnuolo, Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, former Bills head coach and current Falcons offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey, and Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan.
The identity of the coach will be determined in large part by whether Savage stays. To get Cowher, for example, the Browns would most likely have to give him full authority over the 53-man roster.
Apart from the team’s disappointing on-field performance in 2008, the off-field soap opera engulfing this team suggests that it’s likely time to clean house.
