He's not getting punished...he'll be the Offensive Player of the Year.

I'm sure you would feel the same way if Brees were the MVP and Manning were the OPOTY?

How valuable was Brees?

They are 8-8 with him and what would they be without him? 5-11? Is three wins really that valuable?

Let's move on to Manning.....the Colts were 12-4 with him and what would they be without him? 6-10 if they're lucky?

Manning lost his center and most valuable part of his offensive line and other parts of his offensive line as well as Joseph Addai and Marvin Harrison for parts of the year. Not to mention that he is the best game manager in the league.

I'd say he was far and away the MVP.

Wow. Who did Philip Rivers piss off??

I thought he would nab this award. No love for the Pro-Bowl and no consideration for the MVP.

I call BS.

That point is moot because Brees isn't the MVP, Manning is. And Manning wouldn't be the Offensive Player of the Year, Brees is....that's what the Offensive Player of the Year is for...stats. The MVP and OPOTY are different awards. Why have the OPOTY award if were just going to give the MVP award to the person who had the best statistical season? that doesn't make any sense....

I'm not sure how you can definitively say that. Once more, I think that's the problem with judging the MVP based upon "value." Instead of relying largely on statistical output, we're here second-guessing how much value Manning has to his team relative to Brees has to his team. The term "value" is way too vague and there's no way that you could diminish Brees' value simply because his team is 8-8. How do we really quantify value? I have a background in mathematics, so I tend to rely on statistics to tell my story, since I believe statistics to a large degree judge value relative to a team.

Yep. The old "Manning is a leader and he has excellent intangibles" argument. People tend to use that when the stats are lacking.

I'm not sure how you could make a conclusive judgement that Manning has more value to his team than Brees, after watching what Brees has done this year...without his top WR, RB, and TE for a significant stretch.

The Saints would be bad without Brees and the Colts would be bad without Manning. We're splitting hairs here when we're talking about how many wins the Saints and Colts would have without Brees and Manning respectively. And trying to quantify that is the problem I have with the MVP (or at least its name).

I would've given Pennington more consideration, I mean 4 measly votes? C'mon NFL media!

Eh, I guess Manning deserved it. I'm not complaining too bitterly but sometimes these people have to think out of the box a little.
